Post by Newecho » Thu Dec 18, 2008 6:11 pm

I've been going back to their site every day. Finally, it's available.

Here is a summary of what Alchemy is about -

Is there a deal for CamelSpace and CamelPhat owners?

EDIT - nevermind - just found out - it's 20% off for current owners of PhatSpace

Ya, which is pretty sweet. 199 instead of 249 if you own either. Pretty generous to knoack off 50 bucks I'd say.

Looks like a great synth - the real question is whether I *need* it. I have various synths that each do something that this one beast does.

The other consideration is CPU. It says that some patches can take up to 50% of one of your cores...that's a lot.

Yes, but that's the most cpu intensive patch they made. And I'd assume that that's a particularly heavy one to show off a lot of features. The engine is actually said to be far more efficient than cameleon5000.

I don't want to sound like I'm trying to tell you need it at all, no one really needs anything else, but do you really have a synth that can resynthesis so accurately? Or one that can morph between spectral resynthesis, granular and additive with so many modulations?

I'll be the first to admit that I have more synths than I really should and I was sure I didn't need another synth, but I believe this one does quite a few things that all my others don't. And in a very user friendly way.

What else do have Neb, if you don't mind me asking?

Think it will run on my Powerbook G4? The specs say no, but the Omnisphere specs say no as well and I'm running that fine.

^ I've got the following:

Sylenth1 - does all my VA needs and makes me not miss my JP8080
ZeroVector - does my Virus-wannabe patches, as well as vector synthesis among 3 oscillators, with multi-voice phattening
Z3ta - another VA and waveshaper

Sampler - for all my sampling needs

Microtonic - for all my drum synth needs

EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra - for all my strings/orchestral/and piano needs

Waiting to buy Battery 3 for all my acoustic drumming needs

Operator - for all my FM fun fun
Sytrus - for all my hybrid synthesis - does VA, Additive, RM, and FM, as well as .wav import/analysis with partials

White Noise Additive - for my additive and BPM importing needs.

Then I can chain in PhatSpace in the inserts to get basically any sound I want.

Not to mention racking the shit outta any/all of the above to get even more crap.

So yeah, I've well covered. True that having an all in one is great, and the sound quality is fab. But do I *need* another synth? :)

Yeah, tough call. For me it was a no brainer at 125 bucks. Even though I've got Kore 2 w/Komplete 5, Zebra2, Sylenth1 and the ableton suite. Alchemy replaces cameleon5000 for me as it does everything cameleon does and way more. I'm especially pumped about the granular synthesis and the spectral editing + the mad morphing and modulation which isn't in cameleon at all.

I guess you'll have to check out the demo when it comes out, or until then watch the videos on the site. The manual is up too on the site. You may even find you'll sell some of your other stuff!

^ yeah, I watched the videos and heard the mp3s...good stuff indeed. I just want to master what I've got - I find limiting myself to fewer tools that I know well is better for audio production than getting more and more new tools. Keep me posted with your new gear :)

Man, I have almost the same stuff you guys have, and I'm having the same debate. I was a little over-enthused about the whole computer music thing this year, and I may have over bought a bit.

But this thing looks really cool.

This is probably the answer for me too. :)

I have spotted, or maybe correctly guessed Glasgowegian on occasion, and would not have guessed that of Shirley <googling, imdbing, etc>

She does not have a Wikepedia entry yet, but was born in Edinburgh:

To my Canadian (UK parents, one from Glasgow) ear, the highland and Edinburgh accents are closer to each other than either is to the Glasgowegian. I am not an expert by any means, and UKRuss has direct experience, so I will defer.

Cheers,

:D Mainly I was just poking a bit of fun... I have no idea where Shirley is from or what accents mean what in Scotland...
