Draging Clips w/ Automation from Arrangement to Session????
Draging Clips w/ Automation from Arrangement to Session????
Man I just don't understand the logic behind the integration of the Session and Arrangement views when trying to copy the automation over to the session view.
I've Tried dragging a clip with automation from the arrangement view straight to the session view in the same track. (No device automation is preserved.)
I've tried to copy some automation from a clip in the arrangement. Then, paste over a clip in the session view. (Nothing happens.)
Neither work, so....
The only thing I have found to work is exporting the clip via midi or as a live clip.
Then, opening that midi clip or live clip back into the session view.
But this method has a problem.
When exporting it only saves the CC automation. Therefore, any automation under the device lanes (e.g. cutoff, ect..) are not preserved.
I've also tried to consolidate a 1 bar loop with various automation over 8 bars to form a new 8 bar clip. Then, export it. Still, NO device automation!!!!!!!!!
WTF.

Are you trying to copy automation from a clip envelope or a track envelope? If it's the former I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. If you want to copy automation from the track try this:
1. use the "+" to move the automation to its own lane.
2. select the portion of automation you want and copy it.
3. then select the clip so that it appears in the display at the bottom.
4. make sure the "envelopes" box is displayed, choose the parameter you want to apply the automation to from the drop down menus.
5. put the cursor at the place in the clip you want the automation to start and select paste.
6. now you can select the clip, hit tab and copy it to the session view and the automation should go with it.
7. you should then clear the envelopes from the arrangement view to avoid confusion.
i'm not sure i explained that well, or if it solves your problem, but good luck.

It was the clip envelope.
And I just figured it out.
I now see, that even though the clip is in the arrangement. The automation is tied to the track and you have to go in and copy EACH automation lane into the clip envelopes one by one.
You did a good job explaining thanks.
But don't you think this is overkill and a waste of time?
Or am I missing it and does it just allow for more flexibility?

it is overkill in some ways. There are times it's nice to have the separation between the track and the clip if say, you decide you want to switch out a drum loop but want to keep the same automation (which is what the lock envelopes function was for), but it would be awesome if there was a simple way to just select a clip in the arrangement and automatically copy all of the automation from the track to the clip with a single keystroke. Perhaps someone else knows of a way to do this?
in lieu of a proper way to record automations (knob tweaks, xy pad actions, etc) into clips in session, that sounds like an awesome Feature Request, whystylewhystyle wrote:...it would be awesome if there was a simple way to just select a clip in the arrangement and automatically copy all of the automation from the track to the clip with a single keystroke....
lol. I pictured you saying this like the announcer from the price is right. Re: Draging Clips w/ Automation from Arrangement to Session????
Have there been updates to this: ie the ability to copy a clip from arrangement view and be able to preserve automation without extensive envelope copying?
Re: Draging Clips w/ Automation from Arrangement to Session????
instead of doing automation in the arrangement view on a track. why dont you do modulation on the clip in that track. you should be able to see the audio/midi clip on the bottom of your screen like in session view. modulate what you want there and it should be saved to the clip and not to the track
Re: Draging Clips w/ Automation from Arrangement to Session????
Because I like being able to see the absolute value of my automation. When you auto mate in the clip envelope editor, it just says +50% for example instead of what the actual setting is. Am I right or am I missing something?
