are all you need...

learn to use those tools and you're set...

there is no magic preset that fits all audio material...

Use that and you'll never learn how to make vocals sound good. Personally I started by recording vocalists in different spaces with different mics and preamps, and asking them to sing with different tones - I also examined my own voice pretty throughout. But it took many years practice, and back then there were no computers available except in big studios, so things were down to basics for long time. One of the most important things I find was that I didn't have compressor or effective eq available, so I had to get along with choosing the right spot from the room and the right microphone for the task and to ask the singer to sing with the right tone.

) I'm employed by a commercial studio, I record a lot of vocalists and spoken word for ads, and yes, I use very often Distressor

And I just realized that the plug in is free (why on earth I checked this thread in the first place if I didn't read it from the title) which makes the plugin worth to test before bashing.

There is also an OSX version it costs $1999 ex VAT and requires an iLok.

Indeed. Works nicely on winds too.
But backstage as an exciter fits the bill. Applying a bit, after a good take and a good mix, can deliver magic.
All this said by one who thinks Live's reverb is pretty usable (apart from vocals)
