Old-school Hip-Hop question

Post by the_woof » Sun Jan 04, 2009 3:00 am

For anyone making old-school hip-hop (stuff that sounds like Jurassic 5 mostly, Tribe Called Quest, DJ Format): can you describe how you make a beat? That sounds like a really stupid question, but what I really want to know is if you're layering a lot of sounds, how you get nice-sounding kicks and snares, if you use a break going in the background, how much of it is sampled... At this point I'm just working on getting really good drum sounds. So any help there would be great. Thanks!

Let me be the first to say buy an MPC :)

And now for some people that are more helpful than me (I hope).

Haha, I just bought an electribe actually, since I'm more of a composer than a sampler. The old-school backing tracks are kind of a side project with a friend who raps. Obviously, if the electribe doesn't work for me, the MPC is next on the list.

hip-hop beats

Post by LesPasta » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:31 am

if you want a traditional sound i would say buy some james brown records or something similar to that.... sample some breaks, horns, bass lines and whatever else you think sounds cool...

rely more on your samples than your gear... although the mpc would help, you can do a lot with Live by itself... or the electribe maybe...

check my beats and send me a pm... i can help you out

I have checked the beats. Very nice sounds. The PM will be over myspace, if that's all the same to you...

EDIT: got your request.

first-learn how to play and mic live drums or search for some naked drums in a song and sample that beat. find the bpm and some other samples and get some good edits going. arrange veiw is great for this.
2nd-never ever ever no mater what anyone tells you dont sample JB. you will get sued. alot of his breaks are the nicest around and good for learning or practicing teqnique but dont plan on posting them or making any money with them.
what you need is the amen break. i dont think anyone has ever been sued over using that an it is one of the most popular breaks of all times

Get over to the dogs on acid forum.
Go to the grid and do a search for every second day a break.
Just about every break you could ever want all REX'd up and ready to rock live 7.

One of the last pages has all the breaks archived into about three zips...

DJ VAKIS hit the nail on the head. Best £30 I EVER SPENT was buying "All The Breaks". Slice out the hits and go nuts!!!

I love All The Breaks...

Go out and do some crate digging.
Search for the right breaks from vinyl, choppem.
Even better don't use premade sample stuff, be original, search for the breaks never heard before.
That's how it worked in the past.
Be creative with your sampler.

To add some nice flavs, sample them with a ASR10 (wutang stylee) Mpc 3000 or 2000, or a emu sp1200.
Tightness and phatness.

The link that beats me has posted is all of the same beats.
Don't bother shelling out the 30 bucks for the CD, as far as i know it is only a collection of ripped loops, and none of them are cleared for use.
