Wave Editor is a very good one for OSX and it can export for Elektron stuff :

Always excited looking at this stuff, but then forget why I would need it.

What do you guys use these editors for that you can't do in your host programs?

I've been a sound forge user for many years, and rely on it. Unfortunately ever since 7.0, shit has been going downhill...

It's also PC only.

Wave Editor for MAC seems promising, and for only $80... No batch processing or loop editor however: ($50 separate app from them)

One thing I can think of is editing out pops and clicks. I did a set where I was flattening a lot of softsynth loops and Live had the nasty habit of creating pops and clicks when I did it, nothing like hearing CLICK every 2 or so bars.

Uh, I dunno - edit waves?? :P

It surely depends on how you use Live, but I record a lot of external sound sources - vocals, guitars, keyboards, whatever. I regularly reach for a wave editor for such clips and tracks. I mend the occasional glitch, I hide foot-stomping, cut away coughs, reduce the level of spitting p's and d's - generally cleaning up and mending stuff.

Yeah, I can do most of this with warp markers and envelopes and plugs'nstuff and I often do, because I find using an external editor disturbs my workflow. But that's all workarounds and workarounds are schmurkarounds. (Now if that's not a real Yiddish word, it certainly should be!)

I don't need much, just basic editing like trim, cut, delete, insert silence and the ability to change the level of selections, even single samples, with and without fade-ins/fade-outs/crossfades. And reverse of selection would be nice.

What I'm looking for here is convenience and workflow. Live has a great workflow, now it just needs a bit more convenience here and there.

It's not very likely, but I wouldn't mind if Live 8 had no great new features, simply a few tweaks to make things more - you've guessed it - convenient.

My top wish list (in no particular order):
* Built in simple wave editor, usable both in clips and tracks
* A time view (SMPT) next to the bar count
* Folder tracks!
* Warping in Sampler/Simpler, markers preserved when dragging to/from clip
* Two more operators in Operator and the algorithms from the DX7
* The ability to setup one MIDI-controller to skip-to-next-track-and-arm-it (cycling through all tracks), a second to create a new track (and a third to record, but I can already do that obviously)
* Did I say 'Folder tracks!'?

Sorry 'bout hi-jacking the thread! 8)

Not that you couldn't do most/all of this in Live, but for workflow I do the following in Wave Editor:

Cutting loops, hits and passages from extended audio tracks to prep them for use in Live or for making drum kits from. Gain adjusting and fades included - have you seen the fade options in Wave Editor?!

Final render/dither with master comp, eq, limiter and fades if necessary.

Changing audio to/from different formats.

Prepping track playlists and writing cd redbook files.

Analyzing audio files for levels, clipping, dc offset, stereo image etc.

Thanks guys, that does make sense. So, its really making sure you're using the right tool for the right job and doing it properly.

I guess I am a schmurkaround kind of guy. :(

tbh, I am because time is so precious...I wish I had the time to fiddle with wave editors prepping single samples and stuff. I just don't.

...but I am sorely tempted purely becasue of the fade optiosn like you say, something sorely missing in Live.

Another vote for Wave Editor. Another benefit is that you can add track markers to long DJ mixes and burn CDs, plus you can do some cool analysis and sound design functions via the layer blending options. Way more comprehensive fades too. SDS support for external samplers (supports turbomidi for my Machinedrum as well). File format conversion, lame encoding to MP3, AAC support, corrupt file repair, etc.

All in all it's just a much faster way of working more than anything.

agree, sometimes it`s just nice, to have an editor handy.

on PC i use SoundForge, on mac BiasPeak.

if you set it as your external AudioEditor (under Preferences),
it will open automatically, when you press "edit" under the "sample-tab"

i like that.
