I have been doing some work sending MIDI to Live on the Mac using Virtual Ports. It works fine usually, but occasionally Live starts ignoring the Track MIDI.
SYMPTOM:
MIDI Track In Indicator flashes when I send MIDI, but does not play MIDI on tracks.
If I go into MIDI edit mode, I can map MIDI notes to trigger clips and see that the right channel/note info is being sent, but for some reason, Ableton does not seem to want to play the notes.
Track triggering is fine when I start out, and hasn't stopped working during use, but occasionally when I return to Live after doing some other stuff, it has stopped working. The only way I have found to fix this so far is to reboot my computer. Then the MIDI tracks start responding as normal.
I think it might be something to do with putting my machine to sleep (whether or not Live is running) but I haven't been able to reliably reproduce this problem.
I'm running Live 7.0.14 on a Macbook Pro (from last year) with Leopard.
MIDI input starts being ignored from Virtual Ports
Hi Smunk,
what exactly is the Midi source you send through the IAC bus? How does the Midi traffic look in Midi monitor - do you still see regular note on messages while the problem occurs? (http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/)
Best,
Jörg

Hi
The MIDI data being sent to Live looks exactly the same when it doesn't work as when it does work. It's obviously still being recognised as track data because the relevant light is flashing. It's also being picked up fine when I go into MIDI map mode. It just, for some reason, stops triggering notes all of a sudden.
I'm actually sending the note data from a Java application - but as I say, this does seem to be sending the correct note data when I monitor the ports (I've been using MidiMonitor)

happened again
I left everything running over night (including rudely unplugging a hardware controller that was feeding data into my software) and when I restarted my controller it sends messages which Ableton now ignores. Actually, CC messages are still fine, it's just note messages that it's not doing anything with (even though it's obviously receiving them - the track-in light is flashing).
I didn't see anything unusual in the MIDI log either - so I guess Ableton didn't get sent any unusual MIDI garbage or anything like that.
I wouldn't mind, but the only way to solve this is to do a reboot, which seems like it might be something a little more serious than it initially appears.

Hi Michael,
please contact [email protected], include your log.txt
(user/library/preferences/ableton/live 7.0.14) , a screenshot of your Midi/Sync preferences and (if you still have it) the Midi Log file documenting the midi traffic while the problem occurred.
Best,
Jörg
