So long as the set flows well and the punters like it - it doenst matter.

Just please please please dont start getting bored and start mangling the hell out of otherwise decent music for the sake of it - *that* is the problem with laptop DJs - they just cant leave the music alone and have to mess with with it because they can.

Its like dogs pissing on lamp posts.

this is the reason I generally hugely prefer a set that is being played off CD or vinyl - no idiot mangling it for the sake if it.
You're too late. The OP probably defined the whole mash up scene. Did you notice the date?
No  - another thread that someone bumped from pre-history...

I guess hes probably long become that arse with a laptop doing the rounds trashing otherwise perfectly good music.
Nothing to see here - move along!

I DJ with live....i have 7 shows booked in the next 7 weeks and a weekly. This is my biggest schedule in advance to date. I owe it to DJing with live. I have 4 audio tracks setup in ableton to use as 4 virtual tables. All my tracks are warped, and I also improv drum loops from my sampler and bass loops from my synth. It all flows really nice.

I learned to beatmatch and mix on vinyl/cd tables. Without first doing this I think i wold have been worse off. This is my opinion on all DJs.....if you can't hold down a 10 minute mix on real turntables, you have no place mixing anything via anything.

I use Live for DJing and Producing

Post by djoliverm » Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:24 pm

I started out as a regular DJ, have used CDJs and Vinyl and finally made the switch to Live after a year of using it for my production work. I would never go back to DJing with CDs, its just so amazing how you can create your own set in Live to suit your needs. Look at deadmau5's Future Music video, the guy has just some crazy shit going on with Live. Look at Daft Punk. Sure these guys are a bit more "live" than most, but even me who just uses it mostly to "DJ", its just that much more fun to be able to have the time to work on the actual overall mix of your set and not spend half the time beatmatching or what not. It gives you an inmense sense of freedom.

Now, I say that with a background as a traditional DJ. I still think you should learn how to DJ with CDs and Vinyl, since if you don't have an ear for being a DJ (i.e., you can't discern if two records are in sync or later on whether two tracks are in key) then using Live isn't gonna mask any deficiencies you might have. I'm not trying to be mean, but you DO have to have some sort of musical talent in order to DJ with Live or DJ period.

As for the crowd reaction I think they get a kick out of it cuz I use all MIDI controllers and never touch the mixer, so they're like WTF is going on, but once they see all the stuff I can do that a normal DJ can't do then they're in for a real good time. It doesn't matter what you use in the end, so long as the people are dancing and going nuts, they don't care what u use.
