Switching from Acid to Live - 2 questions.
Switching from Acid to Live - 2 questions.
With the latest, long-awaited update to Acid Pro not living up to my expectations, I'm considering switching to Ableton Live big time. There's one tiny feature I use a lot in Acid - as of yet I haven't found an equivalent in Live: it is called "slipping".
Here's what it does: Holding the "ALT"-key and dragging an event moves the content of the event, BUT NOT the event itself. This is great for adding some human feel to an otherwise mechanical/repetitive track of events.
Say you're working on a snare drum track where you first insert an event on every second and fourth note, then come back and "slip" some of the events - they all still start at 2nd and 4th note, but some snare hits will come a little late or be cut off in the attack phase - depending on how you slipped them.
Now: Can this be done in Live's arrangement view and how? Note: I'm not talking about trimming the event itself, thus changing its starting point everytime it appears on the track, but only changing some individual appearences of it, as I choose.
One more little question: Will it be possible to work with video files from one of the next updates, I mean syncing your music to a video file you can play in Live? (For those of us write music for films/animations etc.) Have Ableton yet announced anything? If not, are there workarounds for Windows and/or Mac?
Thanks a lot for your answers,

Don't know about question 2, but I do know that some TV shows are scored with Live, so there must be a way. As to question one, you simply double click the clip you're working on, it'll show up in the clip view at the bottom of the screen. Then you simply double click on a warp marker and drag the warp marker off the beat. With Live you controll where the beats are in relation to the audio, so you can really mess with the groove. Read the manual, experiment and have fun. Good luck!

I do not work with video, but I read about ReVision which can be synced through rewire and is very cheap.
Its a Mac OS X app though
I have not heard so much on implementation of video editing capabilities in Live.

video in Live and push/pulling/replacing events
funny..i just switched to Acid 5 to work with video..have you tried rewiring live to acid yet, using the video sync in Acid? for that matter..I have also started using Adobe Audition 1.5, which also has video..as well as rewire. you can pick this up online (not cracked, a real version) for $50 from a reseller. I have started using it as the audio editor in Live and Acid..$50 is a steal for this program, it does quite a bit, as long as you don't want it to do what Live and acid (and reason for that matter) do best.
As far as your first question- i realize it may be a bit much/overkill- but i have been using stylus RMX for riddim loops..there's a feature called the "chaos designer" that is incredible..basically- you have a loop or part of a loop going, and with several parameters in the chaos Designer- you can change the randomness of the loop, the tuning, the dynamics, and, as in your question, the "push/pull of the timing- as well as several other things- these can be assigned to different parts of the beat, as well as globally- you can also save something as a loop if you like what you hear. And the way RMX is set up- you can also take any loop, convert it to a REX 2, and put it through the CD..I've been doing this with solo saxophone pieces by Ornette Coleman lately- it will give you endless varieties of permutations.
go to the Spectrasonics.net site..and look at the features..you'll be knocked out.
There's a vst that does this for free from bram de jong, albeit not with the same amount of control and features.
the combination of RMX with Live and/or Acid and Reason is..umm..I am still trying to get my head around the possibilities.

Thank you all for your suggestions -
Thinking about it, I'm wondering if it could be a good idea to use both Acid 5 and Live. I've always seen these two apps as very similar, with Live leaving Acid behind lately.
But not only can Acid handle video files, I also find it easier to build (cut, chop up etc.) loops in Acid, that I then can use to make up an arrangement in Live. What do you think? Who is using both sequencers and what are your experiences?
Thanks again,

One more thing: As I own Acid 4 and I'm not sure if the upgrade's worth it...
Acid 4 works as a rewire master only, Acid 5 can be used both as master and slave.
For video editing rewired to Live - does Acid have to be the master or the slave? Or does it even work both ways?
Thanks,

URL? I found the upgrade version for around $70 but thats it.
ReVision is the way to go for scoring. SIMPLE and effective - but Mac only.
As far as variations go, it depends on what you want to do and how you do it. If you are using loops AND MIDI beats, the all-in-one answer is a PC/Mac plugin called Supatrigga.
kvr-vst.com
It works on the audio itself and not midi - so it will work on loops and MIDI. Works KILLER on basslines and scratch loops too. The key to it is SMALL percentages (2% to 4%) and NO slow or reverse. Set to 8th notes.
If you are writing MIDI loops (Drums, Basslines and Melodies) The Live native Impulse has ramdomization biult in to its GUI for you to set that works well for humanising the flavor of drums. And then there is the Live MIDI effects Random, Velocity and Scale...
Check out Supatrigga before all else...

15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

you won't get the extra cd full of loops..but I didn't care about that, as I didn't NEED anymore "hiphup" loops..
That's what I was referencing above..bram de jongs suppatrigga..he has some of the best vst's for "changing" things..He also had a big hand in programming the phasor and filters in Stylus RMX..I thought he had done the Chaos Designer as well..but that was the Spectrasonics boys and girls.kabuki wrote: As far as variations go, it depends on what you want to do and how you do it.
