Ok so as a professional sound developer will I be able to program MAX plugins and effects for ableton and lock them down so they are only usable by users who pay for a license?
MAX in Live certainly looks interestingly from a sound design point of view but if there is no way of licensing the end product its really not every enticing for professional developers.

You could try the Reaper business model: Make it clear that your stuff is NOT free and offer it without copy protection. And make it really cheap. TBH I usually get a crack to demo stuff because I can't evaluate something with sound muting or voices telling me to buy it, or beeps beeping. If I end up liking/wanting it I buy it, else it gets deleted.
What i'm saying is: If someone is determined not to pay for it, they probably won't, but a lot of people feel very supportive (and admire) developers and will pay. Just my 2 cents.

No, you cant lock it down. You can charge people to download it but from there there's no control over it.aikighost wrote:Ok so as a professional sound developer will I be able to program MAX plugins and effects for ableton and lock them down so they are only usable by users who pay for a license?

a)locked down max patches aren't really in the spirit of MAX. The max community has its developers that charge for patches and objects, but once people have them they are free to look at how it works and make their own modifications to it.
b) reaktor doesnt have this capability and that hasnt stopped anyone from designed kickass stuff with it
Re: Will MAX Files be lockable to licenced users?
That's not actually the case - there are several commercially available MaxMSP -built pieces of software, all involving some kind of CP.Geezus wrote:No, you cant lock it down. I think it would be REALLY beneficial to allow us to lock things down, much like you would with a compiled max runtime application now.
