How to do an "Autofiller" - Done!

Post by Parametex » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:19 pm

Ok power users ahoy!

In the SESSION screen how to make a loop do a "autofill" before the next scene is launched?

Any ideas ? I have been pondering this for a while without any result.

This would bring a very nice dynamic touch for the sometimes rather static llaunching of scenes...

Check the pic and you'll get my drift :

Easy. Put a BeatRepeat on the track and set your launch quantise to the same length as the length of the fill you require. Now map the "on" button on th BR to the same key/button as the clip launch for the next track and you and you are away...

Hmmm yeah didn't think of that ... good idea!

Thou the original challenge was to have the "fill" loop as a completely different clip, eg. something completely different material than the actual clip A.

So in a sense that the "fill clip" would in this case actually be a LOOP C.

It then becomes a lot more difficult problem ... or?

if the first scene has more than one bar, as i suspect it would, say it is normally an 8-bar scene, try this:

make a copy of the 8-bar scene and assign it to the scene row directly below the original scene that normally lasts 8-bars.

change the drum track of the extra copy of the scene to have a fill.

after playing 7 bars of the original scene, trigger the new scene for the 8th bar.

voila! you can now trigger the following scene after a nice drum fill.

let me know if this seems like a good way to do it to you.

you could also record the original 8 bars to your arrangement and insert the drum fill in the arrangement (but only if you are not doing a live perfomance)

you can also make use of the legato-feature of clips.

You have your scene A, make an empty scene below that one. Remove all stop-buttons. Put clip A-fill below clip A, set it to legato and clip quantization to 1/16th or 1/8th or none. Trigger that scene when you feel the fill should start.

Hi guys and thanks for chipping in!

Alas the result is a little bit more complicated:

After pushing once the next scene button, I'm looking for the "autofiller" to start playing a fill loop exactly up to the time when the next scene would be launched. This so that it requires only one click.

I tried to mess around with follow actions but they do not have enough possibilities to accomplish the above.

Peace,

i just have the idea that if you do a scene which has no stop buttons and just the drumfill in you might get pretty close to what you want.

the clips keep on playing you get your totally independent fill. i dont know if you can add a follow action to that clip (or to the new created "drumfill-scene") to jump to the next scene as you originally wished

let me know how your choice in the end will be... sounds interesting.

cheers

i come up with another thing: if you fool around with quantization: lets say you have a melody m1 and m2; a drum d1 d2, and a drumfill df

lets say global quantization 8bars is applied to m1 m2 d2. let the d1 and df quantization be 2bars now you assign the 2nd scene button and the clip launch button (of the df clip which is in another scene) to the same key. now d2 has to be on a own track otherwise it might be triggered instead of the df. i cant check it out right now (im at the office) so let me know if it works ^^

P.s. The midi channel needs to be fed back to Ableton and the inputs 'remote' switch needs to be activated in the the prefs. (With Midi yoke or IAC whatever)
