Original Post

For the last 5 years, I have been shaping and toning my Ableton Live performance set canvas into what it is today. Over the last few months I have been working hard to clean this up and turn it into something publicly available.

This Ableton Live Set covers many areas including

* Compressing the layers of a tune down into a manageable format
* Cutting the tune into loops and samples, ready to jam out live
* Mixing easily between two, three, or any number of tunes in one single Ableton Live file
* Routing audio through sends and sub channels so real time audio effects can be used
* Chaining up channels with effects that suit each other
* Utilizing blank dummy clips to uniquely automate parameters of effect chains

It has been tried and tested on dance floors all over the world and is now ready for you to get involved.

This set is an ongoing project, that will constantly be updated with new versions, similar to how software gets released. I will listen and discuss with those who are using it, and add new functionality as time goes on.

Due to the amount of work I have put into producing this, and to keep the quality of the community that uses it high and tight, I have decided to restrict the downloading of the files and the involvement in the project to people who have paid subscriptions on my website

This is a big move for me, as keeping things freely available has always been a big thing for me... however I feel I am at a stage where I can charge a small amount for a premium service.

The set will be available for free download, but it will not be the current version. The free version also lacks samples and loops (you have to add in your own) due to file size/bandwidth restrictions.

The new subscription service is $10us for one month, and gets you access to the 250meg live pack, streaming and downloadable HD video tutorial, and most of my music in WAV format. I will add more fun stuff as things progress.

I am also restricting the signups to 100 initially, and will relaunch this once the free version is ready to go in a more mainstream manner in several weeks.

Keen to hear what everyone thinks about this, it's a pretty big thing for me to do.

Cheers!

-Tom

I have to say that your videos helped me get the idea of how to craft my live set. It has been such a huge help just to get the concept together and I took the idea and ran with it.

I recommend everyone check this guys stuff out.

I have recently done a few gigs with massive results, people were pleased.

That all said I might pony up some money to see what you say about effects because I am always trying to improve.

CHEERS!!

Very cool. Always happy to support you with a few duckets.

I don't know about other DAW communities but I'm willing to bet that Ableton peeps are one of few communities, if not the only, where you can get so many great add-ons for ridiculously cheap prices. If we weren't so easily enamored with shiny objects we probably would never need to go to third party software for our needs.

This is an interesting way of doing it.

How do you think Live 8 will affect your set?

As I was reading this I thought to myself "cool, this reminds me of tom's setup" (which I dl'ed and haven't yet check *shame*) and then I looked at the poster's name and laughed

Nice work, and I'll be sure taking a look into it (when I finish exam season).

Still thinking of rellocating here?
Cheers

Thanks guys! A great response so far, hope you are all happy with how it operates.

If you are curious as to what I am raising money for, my computer has really hit the skids and I am having to borrow the girlfriends to play out, so looking to get a nice new machine!

hey tom,

looking forward to downloading. Sadly right now is not the best time money wise for me and the wife.... So i'm a bit sad about that, but i've learned quite a bit from you and i look forward to supporting you.

Big step, good job. A lot of people would have wanted "advance warning" about the charge and stuff, but Best Buy doesn't email me when their price goes up (etc etc). Do your thing.

Don't forget to change your signature graphic to represent the cost and the new set itself. Godspeed.

agreed.

Tom - also consider that the there's a new file sharing system coming with Live 8, along with that comes ways to share files online where you can get the activity off your server.

definitely a great idea for you to make some money off of these things, your free stuff has been amazing.

best of luck!

downloading the big boy as I type.

If I were to play nothing but your set(s) at a gig would it be good form to advertise my name followed by "Tom Cosm Tribute Artist"? I totally would for the WTF? factor.

Is this also your way of getting out of playing in the states? Playing out via other people? :)
