live 8 - best update since 4?

Post by radib » Thu Jan 22, 2009 3:24 pm

felt way like. lots of detail features after the last versions just added bad instruments and had very few real improvements (ok, racks and external devices were grand deals).

really feels good, even those trashy sounding pitchshifter and vocoder toys. i´m most for the looper (thanks!) and the midi impovements. that goes so far i´m ready to break with my pirate identity and will buy live 7 pure this week, doing the upgrade somewhen.

and the euphoria don´t stop, like the rebirth of a nearly forgotten dream. max integration is WONDERFUL, and even the akai apc feature does adress a toy hater like me. its heaven as my new setup incudes a moto 8 track for letting external synths into the box (basically just because of the fuckin great uad moog stereo filter, a mutator is too expensive) and a soundcraft folio with 8 mono ins for external mixing/eq-ing.

back in sync :) maybe finding a new flat for all of this madness.

To answer your original question, "Is Live 8 the best release since Live 4?" I'd have to say, "Since we haven't actually seen it yet, I really don't know."

As for your piracy, let us know when Live time bombs in front of several thousand people during your most important gig ever.

no i´m not such asshole, i wasn´t doing gigging or even not recording real album. just some fooling around with it. last year i wrote 200 songs only on acoustic guitar, and now... yeah lets transform them into sound orgys. and it seems the best time to spend money on it.

forgive me!

Dont mind the haters here, there are tons of people who pirate shit (even big musicians). I'm in the same boat as you, I could never afford Live so I've been pirating it (with no problems btw, so I dont care about time bombs) but this version has moved me to dip into my tuition money and buy the full fucking suite. They deserve it and I'm supporting it, even if I could probably get it for free if I waited. They finally addressed all my issues with Live and blew my mind with M4L and all the other new shit. Give me all the shit you want, I dont care. I'm buying it this time. All of it. They deserve no less

dito. this version seems a killer (if its stable). my budget is 370€/month for food, electricity, clothes, drinks/culture etc.... less than 12,50€ a day for life.

so abes, this really means something.

after watching that akai movie it seems like soon comes the time to sell my girlfriend. thats doing exactly all the way i do work with it so much more clearer and quicker. takes computer music making one big step further away from bureaucracy.

seems they really invested much in concept and detail work for this whole version. not just because max and the akai, just nearly everything new. for me the first really big surprise of the year.

This update is so good it's scary. There are bugs but it basically works man oh man there are so many new little tweaks and great new toys. Example: You can right click on something you want to assign to a Macro, and then Live will fill in the name straight away. Often it wil be too long but you can edit. Also, you can choose to have a Macro knob display 0...127 like before, or it can display whatever it is that is displayed, a percentage, or a frequency.

There are lots of tiny tweaks a lot of it is self explanatory anyway if your well versed with 7 you only have to read up on the new stuff.

Vocoder is so good it is scary, it can do such an insane amount of filtery tricks it has an internal noise source with which you can do all sorts of reverb-ish sounds, the noise has a "crackle" paramter for lo-fi sounds, too many things to mention but it's actually really easy to use and every parameter rally positively does something, so it's very easy to tweak.

Operator now has a similar Midi patch thing as Sampler so you can record some Midi controllers in session view at least and patch them to stuff like Oscillator level and crossfade(!) algorhythm is automatable, very glitchy jumpy bubbly, waves can be drawn with a pencil which works great for bright "digital" sounds. Ladder and SVF filters sound fatter than the old one which is still there for compatibility. New white noise wave great for making drum sounds.

And so on and so forth...

UMMMM I think Vers. 5 was the best release since 4.....

And then I think Vers. 6 was the best release since 5

And then I think Vers. 7 was the best release since 6

And NOW I think Vers. 8 will be the best release since 7

At Any rate i can't wait to scoop it and the APC and get back to work!

that doesn´t make much sense. or isn´t the next release not just always the best release since the last? nevermind. live 4 was hell of a great release, it changed my life and made me start doing some music myself. 5 and 6 were ok. 7 to me a bit disappointing. but NOW....
