OT: Connecting two computers to one audio interface?

Post by hacktheplanet » Tue Dec 14, 2004 5:35 am

This is probably a stupid question, but is it possible to connect two computers to an external audio interface? On my Firewire 1814, there are two Firewire ports. I know they are there for daisy chaining, but I am wondering if it's possible to connect two computers instead.

Thanks!

no , its not possible that way.
the extra firewire port is for extending the computers firewire to other external devices... you cannot bridge two computers with it.

just the same as you cannot have 2 computers connected to 1 firewire HD, both sharing the HD.

Well, you can use the processing power of 2+ machines ...

... at the same time with this: http://www.fx-max.com/fxt/ ... which essentially accomplishes the same thing.

what you could also do is use Wormhole (or Jack i think) to network the 2 machines (over ethernet) and send the audio from one machine out via the other - which is connected to the interface. you may have to dabble around with latency.. but it does work..

Cool, thanks.
I'm gonna check out that software, and also something called iMidi, which sends MIDI data over tcp/ip. It's neato. http://www.grantedsw.com/imidi/
