[4503] Browser interactions are sluggish

Post by hoffman2k » Thu Jan 22, 2009 9:00 pm

Action such as loading a preset, saving a preset, moving a file to a different folder and renaming files all take 5 to 15 seconds. On the mac it causes a spinning beach-ball sometimes and Live freezes for that 5 to 15 second duration.

Not happening for me - all of those actions complete quickly and definitely no spinning beach ball.

Though there might be a sligt delay due to not-yet optimized procedures, 5 seconds are much more delay than I've ever seen.

Does this happen for any preset, or only for certain ones?
If only for certain ones, can you name one or two if they are Ableton content?

For moving files, similar question: Do you see this delay for any file, or only for Presets and Live Sets?

The best way to reproduce this is trashing a preset.
I hear it being in my trash bin instantly, but Live freezes for over 5 seconds before I can control it again.

Every time I try to do the same after I did this, it only takes a second to delete a preset. All files seem to go as quick. Regardless if they're old or new presets.

Are you on windows?
On Windows, the first use of the trashcan can take a while, several seconds, even half a minute if Windows has a bad day.
This also happens in Windows Explorer, there is nothing we can do about it.

But this is obviously not the reason for the delays on renaming, moving, loading, saving, etc.

Could you have a look into your preferences directory and tell me the size of the file Database\files.db ?

Thanks,
Stefan

Its weird and not very consistent.
I run into the bug, decide to capture it on video.. Everything is smooth again.
I forget about it for a while, suddenly I'm waiting 5 seconds for a folder to be opened.

I'll try to narrow this down but its a slippery little bug.

Are you using b2 or b1?
Do you see any difference between these two w/ respect to this issue?

Thanks alot for your help!

I'm using beta 2.
Its equally as difficult to reproduce in both beta's. But they're both slower than Live 7 in browser operations.

Is there any difference when you're browsing folders filled with many audio files vs. folders with less? I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Live's new browser waveform display feature, and whether it does some kind of scan of the folders when navigating.

In my case I'm mostly dealing with presets so I'm sure its not related to previewing.

This may be related or not.

I can save a new preset no problem. However when I right-click and select delete for this new preset in the browser, nothing happens (but no freeze). But if I select the preset and then hit the delete key, it operates normally. This happens for me every time

i have very slow browser action here as well, especially when dragging in tracks from unfolded sets.
i have to wait almost 1mn before the insert mark appears in the mixer.
