Setting latency for external effects (BBE)

Post by mlangsman » Sun Jan 25, 2009 10:05 pm

What's the best way to do this ? I have a BBE sonic maximiser which i want to integrate with live for phattening up and resampling loops. The best thing I could come up with is monitoring a clip playing and at the same time that clip routed thru the external instrument device and then adjusting latency till they sound in time by ear. Is there a more precise way of doing /measuring this ? Im also not convinced the latency is staying constant but I could be going mad....

Any help appreciated !

Btw I dont know how the plugin compares to the hardware bbe but Ive had this device for ages which someone was chucking out and only just got round to hooking it up. Totally phattens up beats and bass like a mofo and makes loops sound tight and polished :) - highly recommended !

Doesnt live do this for you with the eternal fx plug in?

I am running out through my RME to the Shipmann Ebbe and Flut and back in and it's all in sync.

Audio fx, external fx or somehting like hat in the Library.

Cheers
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

I am using the external effect plugin but theres a latency setting on it. The maunal just says live cant calculate latency for an external device so it needs to be done manually :/

Play a sound clip with a sharp attack (click kick for example) to your ext outs and the BBE and record it on a new armed audio track. When you're done, open the newly recorded clip, zoom in pretty far and read your latency on the time scale.

Forgot to mention : repeat this operation at least three times because there are some inconsistencies in the latency figures.

play a sinustone panned to left in the external and panned right on a internal track(same sound source) then adjust latency til the sound is in the middle.

(use headphones)
