FL Studio Piano Roll

Post by foogermooger » Tue Jan 27, 2009 1:11 pm

Is anyone here using FL Studio 8 at all. I quite like the idea of that Piano Roll thing they got going on, i think it could be a good fast workflow method to get into for putting ideas down.......and just wondered if anyone is using it alongside Ableton...If so whats your thoughts on it?

I consider Ableton to be my main workhorse, but i must admit ive read a few good things about this FL Studio piano roll thing.

Heres a video to describe what i mean, and ive no idea who made it but the dude sounds like Pee Wee Herman http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_33ydtYmVDM I got bored by the end of the video clip, but i get what he is talking about...Would actually be a good tutorial but for the voice making me want to have a sleep. No offence to the person in question....

I find the FL piano roll much easier to use than the Live midi pane. I know folks who prefer the Live workflow, so I suppose it's preference. FL is cheap as hell tho, so it's worht checking out.

I use FL Studio 8 XXL. The piano roll is indeed very easy. You can quickly set up your ideas. You can arpeggiate, strum, flam, chop the notes with a few mouse clicks. Piano roll is indeed easier to use than Live midi pane. For the rest the workflow is must more logical in Live than in FL studio.

Does Live 8 improve the piano roll in any way?

As far as i can see so far FL Studio's piano roll features can only be used with its built in vst instruments which looks like the only pain so far about this feature.

What makes it better? I haven't used FL in years so I don't really remember.

its easier and has WAAAYYY more tools and flexibility to do a lot of complicated, intricate edits. It even has parameter automation built in underneath the notes, in both the point per note way ableton does it as well as traditional automation.

I think there are some functionalities limited to FL instruments, like sliding notes, but it isn't many, and it's not so much a limitation as an extension of functionality. It allows processes that most vsts aren't coded for.
