You can buy "Ears" for music production? Is that some kind of device they call or brand-named "Ears" that listens for you and analyzes audio or something? I heard the Japanese were working on something like this for a while. I think I read something in Discover magazine a while ago...

A lot of times de tune of a kick doesn't really matter. I normally play a sine note at C-1 and it works fine.

so guys, what do you use to generate sinewaves?

ive tried to sample a sound forge generated one, and loaded it into sampler, but something about it doesnt sound quite right. im not sure if its not catching the right cycle on the sample. i dunno...

you can download audacity for free or if you go into your simpler presets in live

simpler - components - spectral

there is a digital sine wave there

I`ve gone round in circles with this and I think the reference method is best for determining kicks, rather than programs like mixed in key and melodyne. You can double check with spectrum also, plus it trains you ears.

I use eletric and its custom preset.

Pitch the kick up with 24, 36 or 48 steps, until it has becomes a high tingy tone.

Then play various notes on electric until you find a note that matches. If unsure you can copy the kick put it in the pad next to it and lower it a step. Then trigger each other in row. Reference the electric against with the two notes a step apart.

If still unsure you can check also with spectrum.

I find using the two note really helps you work it out especially if the kick doesn`t fall exactly on a actual note
