mpc1000 as a midi controller for live 7?

Post by stayhigh » Fri Jan 18, 2008 9:38 pm

can some one tell me how to set up the mpc1000 (jj os) and ableton 7 preferences so that i can midi assign the pads of the mpc to abelton functions? eg: pad one of the mpc turns on gate in abelton. i know how to set up other midi devices with ableton- but could never get my mpc to work. is it possible?

in the main window of the mpc turn on midi, it's on the right side, two rows of text up.

then just hook it up like any other controller.

sorry to dig up a year old thread, but i have a related question...

I have an mpc 1000 and a Macbook running Live 7, i've got them connected through a emu midi interface...

Basicly what i want to do is use the pads of the mpc to control drum racks in live.

I've managed to get them synced meaning when i press play on the mpc my ableton starts to play too, but when i hit any of the pads noting happens, even if i use a synth like operator i can't get anything through...

does anyone know what i'm missing here?

what are your midi settings for each device?

is midi out turned on in the MAIN window of the MPC?

the TRACK IN turned on for the midi port in Live, what's engaged?

do you see the midi activity indicator light up when you hit an mpc pad?

do you know which notes the drum rack responds to and what the mpc sends? do you know how to check?

first off, thanks for the help!

The settings for each device:

On the mpc i have at the midi tab these settings:
Active recieve channel: all
soft thru: ast track
sequence change by program change : on
pad to internal sound: on

at the sync tab i have:
sync in: off
sync out: a/b

and at note i can see all the notes corresponding to the notes i.e. pad 1 = 37 (C#1)

Not sure what you mean by "is midi turned on in the main window of the mpc", do you mean "type"? i have that set to midi.

In Live:
if i have the "ext" turned on and i press play on the mpc, Live starts playing. But if i play any of the pads there is no reaction from the activity light.

to test i opened up a new operator synth and have that armed/engaged.

----
so i'm guessing that the problem is in the mpc, it's not sending out signals as the indicator shows nothing when i press pads

on the mpc MAIN window at the right side of the window, just below center is the text 'MIDI', below that if it says OFF, highlight the field until it sas 1A.

in Live turn ON REMOTE IN (maybe it's TRACK, I get those two confused.)

on the Operator track (good idea) turn monitor to IN.

the midi in indicator (upper right corner of Live) is a key sign to look for.

that's it, midi in the lower right corner of the main window said off... thanks!

is there a way to change the midi note though? because the pads are not corresponding to the pads in drum racks... meaning when i press pad 1 on the mpc it now plays a different pad in drumrack...

i have tried going to the note tab at midi in the mpc, but if i change the value of the pad corresponding to the notes in drum racks, but it still plays the original note...

changing the notes...

you may have noticed that when you play a pre-built kit on a Live drum rack from a keyboard that the drums are all over the place. this is because they follow the GM standard midi drum layout. mpc users are in luck because the mpc is laid out that way by default.

either change a drum rack to follow the mpc or make an mpc program with the notes moved around to suit Live or just hit a pad on the mpc, look for which drum rack cell lights up and drop the sample there.

I tweaked the Live drum rack, YMMV.
