Weird stuff with 10.3.6
Weird stuff with 10.3.6
Does it make sense that Live is already at 8% CPU power with only one track of audio recorded...no effects...no MIDI nothing. Things seem to have changed quite a bit since upgrading to OS X 10.3.6. Biggest issue though is that I can no longer get audio when I choose firewire as my port. Never happened before.
Advice?

Figured out the problem by myself. Though, after using Mac this past year, and a PC before that, I'm seriously, seriously considering the switch back to PC. Sigggh. I truly love Apple products, but not only can't I justify the $$$$ difference, I can't justify the speed difference...with the PC operating faster.shtreimel wrote:Live 4.04.ulidjan wrote:what live version do you use?

To be fair, when I got Logic 7 for my 'ancient' 2x867Mhz G4, then I realized how important it is to code for the platform itself. I do think Ableton could do optimizations for Live for the Mac platform, for example make use of the second CPU.... And Altivec instructions... Or at least a freeze in the Arrange view so we could freeze down CPU-intensive tracks --Kent

Dunno,
but, using a fairly new Apple 15" PB with Live, Absynth and Reactor, I've never had any problems. It could well be the case that, if you're downloading "interesting new stuff" from the net, the PC goes bezerk. The PB I'm using for performances has never failed me - maybe as it is still in a sort of out-of-the-box state of affairs. We had many VJ-sessions where a PB or a laptot copped out, because a "tiny meaningless" piece of soft had been downloaded and installed...

optimization for mac, yes please...
Hello,
I also noticed a siginifant drop in performance now that I use a macintosh. In particular the GUI gets heavily affected and I get sound gaps when unmuting effects.
I can't run more than this or it overloads or i get little clicks in the audio and it stutters:
this is a PB 1.33GHz, 1.25Gb ram, Indego sound card:
7 tracks of audio [each with an EQ4 plugin]
3 returns [2 with delay and 1 with reverb on economy setting]
2 midi tracks with 2 soft synths.
On a dell latitude X2 PIII 800, XP, 632Mb ram, with same audio card:
10 audio tracks [each with an EQ4 plugin]
4 returns [exact same delay and reverb + a chorus effect]
3 midi tracks with 3 soft synths
It just doesn't add up, the PC has far less power than the PB, and yet the PB is not as fast.
---
Please optimize the code for Mac too... please pretty please pretty pretty please! with sugar and cream on top.
=)

What softsynths are you using? Absynth is a pig on my powerbook 667. I can run one synth, the simpler, impulse and have abut three or four other tracks of straight aiff's or wavs playing without major problems.
You need to download Onyx for mac osx and optimize your system, it seriousley helps.. Also, just make due with what you can use on the slower cpu, render it and add as you go..
I was thinking of connecting my g5 tower up to the laptop screen and bringing that out if i ever performed or anything.. Amazing how outdated a $2500 laptop can become in two years. its gross.

i just switched over to Mac as well. Logic 7 has been amazing, I have a lot of external synths and the whole environment thing is sweet.. Really an encyclopedic program... but yes, Live works better on an Athlon 64 chip than a G5.
I couldn't tell you why for the life of me, but I'll be the 3rd person in this thread to say it.
What does Onyx do besides just give you crash reports, etc? I'm still new to Mac and after my experiences with PC's -- very nervous to install anything but Logic/Live and Final Cut Pro. (my Mbox is in the corner for now)

Onyx clears logs, repairs permissions, cleans caches (system as well as internet).. I notice a 5-15 percent increase in cpu speed on my powerbook after running it..
Another thing to check is the activity monitor utility, make sure there arent any uneeded things running.. I installed a driver for my canon scanner a long time ago and found that it continued to run a process in the background all of the time, sometimes causing the fan to turn on when i was doing something like checking my email.. Powerbooks are sensitive in that way..
The little things like that can add up pretty fast, with OSX at least its pretty easy to optimize.. Unlike other operating systems.
