I would imagine that he is turning in his aforementioned grave at the TV shows, the butter, and the endless band reformation...

I love a bit of butter on my toast. Can't beat it. And while Country Life is usually cheaper, I always buy Lurpak because I don't want to give a company that employs Lydon any of my non-filthy, hard earned lucre.

Blimey... I really do hate the Pistols! Such a charade. A well managed, well worked one, but a lie none the less. In fact, punk as a whole is a pretty blank generation for me, musically.

Post-punk... different story. Some of the NYC bands around CBGB's that get lumped in with 'punk' (e.g. Television / Talking Heads / particularly Suicide) are also fantastic; and the Ramones are great. I'll credit The Clash for their dub experiments. But that's about it.

The DIY ethic that it spawned is the lasting legacy of 'punk' for me. Nothing musically.

there is no way he could have ever made it to 51

I don't think Punk can really mean much after the fact if you didn't actually live through it - it would have meant way more at the time when it was new - I mean the 70s was still pretty conservative by modern standards, so they were actually stirring up a lot of shit, but to our times it seems lame

I have to agree though that I'm more the post-punk generation, but I still went through my punk phases

the big brother thing was bewildering, but I guess if you've already passed your prime the cash/publicity would be a fair incentive

I left the UK before the butter ads I think thankfully 8O

An awful bass player. Idiots like Sid Vicious opened up the doors for other rock-monkeys such as Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse to become main stream news fodder. Great accomplishment.

This is certainly a sentiment echoed by friends who were there at the time. "You weren't there, man, you weren't there" they say to me in the tones of a cliched Vietnam vet :D

The thing is... as much as I love 'em... these guys don't seem to have grown up and moved on! They all seem trapped in a 70's timewarp. Still wearing the same clothes; still spouting the same rhetoric etc.

I mean, if the 70's were so awful, surely you'd want to have left them by now? :D I've no doubt the music/lyrics had greater significance at the time, but it's irrelevant now.

I guess the real question is: where is the protest from the youth of today? (at 31 years old, I don't feel I can class myself as 'youth' anymore :( )

yeah - same age as me then

I agree - crusty old punk bastards! ha ha.....nah...the reason people cling to these things is because there was a kind of identity to it - now there's fuck all but plastic wankers with dolce and gafuckingbana text messages

I'm glad we're having another recession, it'll sort some of this decadant shit out and bring a bit of culture back

Crazy! punk still makes people mad to this day!!

I was a punk from 78 thru to the 90's when it merged with the rave scene and created the massive free party movement in the UK. (And I'm still a punk at heart in many respects)

The negative response to my obituary to John Beverly has made me feel all young again!!

Many thanks to all for making me feel 17 once more.

(PS I on no account condone the use of heroin or any class A drug and feel no responsibility for knowing anyone that uses or god forbid overdoses/dies from them)

Please remember that Elvis, Hendrix and Joplin all died from opiates of one form or another and though they are in no way the same 'musical' league as Sid were equaly as responsible to thier fans and peers for thier actions.

Its an evil drug that preys on the weak and I've lost many real freinds over the years, some dead, some living dead...but all lost.

Still, 30 years since Sid died, long time man....makes one feel rather old!

Apprently, according to a 'news' article' his mum gave him the lethal dose to save him from bird....?

Anyway, my appologies for any offence I caused by my post :)

Not worshipping, just noticed that it was 30 yaars ago to the day. made me feel proper middle aged. thought I'd see if I could make someone else feel old too!

Thing is though, you dont really feel any different inside when you move up the numbers, reackon I'll be on Live 20 when I'm in my 80's though it will all be mind controlled by then so hope I dont get alzheimer's!!

His mum was a junky the whole time he was alive basically, he grew up around it. I never knocked the man again after hearing that. I mean what what would you expect of him living in those conditions? At least he made an interesting spectacle of himself, and said some funny things.
