He destroyed all leftover props and models from 2001 to stop anyone from making a decent sequel. He didn't talk to Malcom McDowell after Clockwork Orange for the rest of his life. He almost fired his first DP for moving the camera and changing the lens without telling him. He disowned Spartacus as a failure. He refused to let his works be released in full screen (4:3) ratio because that particular ratio compromised the scene composition in every one of his movies.

After all of that, he had industry greats lining up to kiss his ass until his dying day, and granted, I'm not putting Bale on Kubrick's level, but what I am saying is that when you look past the heated moments on set at the finished work, having actors who take their work that seriously is important, and if you think Bale is full of shit or isn't a great actor, watch equilibrium, then the Machinist, then Batman begins in that order, and tell me that someone who goes through that kind of weight change for their job doesn't take their job seriously or care about the finished product.

Also, anyone who thinks that Bale should be run out of the industry ought to look in the closet of the people who spread this shit and see how many skeletons they have...who doesn't have an occaisional flare-up when you look close enough. Oh, wait, I forgot, everyone who dishes criticism is perfect.
Why don't you just marry him?
Anyone who speaks like that to someone else is a cock, and deserves to be laughed at, humiliated and scorned. Its just not worth it.

And the photography guy should have had more self-respect and told him to get fucked, or punched him.

Its the same with Gordon Ramsay, why do people put up with it? he can bake a nice cake so he spends his life screaming and spitting at people. Stupid Rangers twat. This world needs more face-punchings.
I'll marry him as soon as he dumps you

chill out with the whole "the world needs more face punchings" crap, the world needs less people who think that way, and a little more respect for what goes into a highly emotional art. If you'll look at Chris Vine's post, you'll see that there is actually a little context to the whole situation, which you were obviously ignorant of - something that I already suggested was probably the case for the whole fiasco about this clip. Instead, you were ready to judge him without knowing the full story, and that makes you as pompous as you think he is.
Remind me, in what film was this emotionally draining, artistic scene taking place?
Ah yes, the new Terminator.

The DP on TERMINATOR SALVATION, Shane Hurlbut, is a apparently a light tweaker. He's a fairly young DP and likes to fiddle with his lights on set during action, which is a big "NO NO" on most productions unless worked out in advance with performers. But apparently Shane was a pretty unrepentant light tweaker.

The scene in question was a very emotional and tough scene between Christian Bale and Bryce Howard. A scene that required soul bearing and a deep level of immersive concentration. The sort of scene where everyone on set knows not to get in anyone's eye lines, and definitely not to move lights around while FILMING. You lock that shit down before the scene starts.

Bale had indeed warned the DP on multiple occasions about messing with lights while the cameras were rolling, and Bale was in the midst of a painful scene with Bryce, what was described to me as being the emotional center of the film and his character for the film.

Now, the reason I know all of this is because the person that was there felt that it should be made perfectly clear that Christian Bale was the utmost gentleman and cool guy on set. And the DP really was doing something that professional DPs with experience just don't do. Not during a performance.
Might he have said to the director "I'm finding this scene hard because someone is messing with the lights. Could you get him to stop? Thanks lets go again".

Do you have any idea how many times the dp had pulled that crap prior to that blow up? no

Did I say it was an "emotionally draining, artistic scene taking place"? no

your criticism isn't funny, mature or applicable - sounds like the interwebz are pretty serious business round your parts, and I can only assume that you have no aspiration to ever work in the film industry...with an attitude like that, you wouldn't make it past the janitorial closet on a movie set

I'm English so I wouldn't make it past the caretaker's closet on a film set.

But no, I have no aspirations to work in the film industry.

I have no idea what you are talking about re. the "interwebz being a serious business round my parts".

I do maintain my position that despite the emotional nature of Christian Bale's work, he sounds to me like a cock.

My friend is a nurse. Her job is quite stressful too! And emotional sometimes. But she doesn't rant at her colleagues, shouting and swearing for a full two minutes, when something goes wrong. Because, unlike Christian Bale, she is not a cock.

I could have sworn you were American, with the obvious "face-punch first, get the story later" attitude you were displaying a few posts ago

Nothing wrong with that - the next time I'm in the UK working on a film, I'll send a runner to your place of work for sandwiches

You certainly have the right to think so, and not go to his movies

Actually, the level of stress that it takes to convince someone that your character is as realistic as possible is a stress that your friend hasn't dealt with, and she probably never had as much money riding on something like this. I mean, how much money does a nurse make? I'd bet money right now that a years salary for your nurse friend couldn't pay the cost of a location crew and equipment for a single day.

Let's face it, you're clueless as to what goes on behind the screen...I mean, Hollywood mocks itself over that kind of stuff all of the time, but in reality, it takes a lot of work, money, coordination, and a love for what you do to go thorough the process of working in that industry and maintaining successful longevity. And yeah, there are LOTS of douchebags in the industry, but more often than not, the tiniest thing gets blown out of proportion over something taken completely out of context, much like this thread.

The really sick thing? Paparazzi publications WANT you to think he's a prick, they want you to ridicule these people without a real clue as to what's going on - it's what keeps them thriving, it's what keeps money in the pockets of the photographers climbing trees and fences to take pictures of people's private lives, it's what has them digging through trash to find underwear and used paper towels, it's what has them stopping traffic to snap pics of celebs at stoplights when ambulances need to get through, and it's what has them ruining everyones dinner when a celebrity goes out to a restaurant.

Read up on Noam Chomsky and Edward Murrow, and then try telling me that any of this is even important. American Government would rather you be paying attention to something unimportant like this than what they are really doing - TMZ and the like keeps people from paying attention to what really matters, and you're buying into it.

I'm not going to edit it out, but the sandwich remark isn't typically my style, I just don't dig it when people speak out of school.

You're still in school! Although apparently your school periodically sends their students to film studios in the UK, in order to send runners to publishing houses to buy sandwiches?

I can see that you're passionate about your craft, and REALLY like Christian Bale. But to imply that the job of an actor, working on a film about robots, is more stressful than that of a nurse, on the basis that he gets paid more money by the hour, is just bizarre.

I don't want to talk about Christian Bale any more. You've won the discussion.

Bale rocks my world. It heartens me to know there are still old school primadonnas out there balling people out for no reason.

Like Rourke who recently in an interview in the paperz over here said to his manservant in the hotel room "Stop hovering over me! Cunt!' but then calmly carried on with the interview like nothing had happened. huzzah!

LOL, I love it. Wish I had a job where i could disrespect my colleagues like that. Some are total wankers and deserve a good Baleing.

Yeah! Go Bale!

My tea went up my nose. You'd think it's Macbeth-level material they were shooting.

Shane Hurlbut has 9 years of DP credits according to IMDB.

I'll lay off the sarcasm from now on, apparently speaking literally is the only way...

By "speaking out of school" I mean, people who have no idea what they're talking about, not actually being in school. And by the sandwich remark, I was joking that you probably make sandwiches for a living, although I really have no idea. Also, my school does have a "semester overseas" program where you spend a semester in the EU learning their approach to the trade, but I'm pretty busy here in the states without signing up for that.

It's not about Bale, it's about acting with understanding when you have no context in which to put the situation, which is apparently not a problem for a lot of people. Personally, I hated Reign of Fire, and thought he was terrible in it.

Finally, the possibility of getting sued (always possible in the film world, don't ask what for), being responsible for millions of dollars in investors money, and obviously having the world watching you for every tiny flaw is definitely more stressful than the career of a nurse...maybe not a doctor, but definitely a nurse.

I didn't realize the business of literature required its employees to be so literal, I bet you're a riot at parties, and since that was sarcasm, what it really means is that I think you probably have a rough time socializing at parties, but I don't know since I don't know you.

I don't want to talk about Bale anymore either, I just think joe schmoe ought to give the guy a break - people make mistakes, and just because that guy is more popular than most people doesn't mean that dealing with shit he takes seriously is different for him than anyone else.

why are you drinking tea with your nose?

To be fair to bale, i suppose it must be annoying having someone do that. We dont know the context i suppose, maybe he had already professionally talked to McG about it or indeed the DP himself. And this was the last straw. on the other hand if he hadn't and had just exploded without any prior warning, then the man is so very low down on any professional level
