I absolutely refuse to believe the writers had NO IDEA why even back in Season 2, Sayid and Jack noticed electromagnetic energy as well as an underground steel encased facility.

Perhaps the electromagnetic energy related to the fail-safe key...but the reinforced steel structure was created to hold Jughead. About Richard Alpert being present at John's birth? Well apparently the writers/producers have stated since Season 3 that they've always had an outline of how Lost would play out. The trick of course was fleshing out the main ideas...which we are now seeing in all their glory.

Now about that four toe statue...gotta be Sawyer.

The idea that various groups of people/cultures have found the island throughout time - then worshiped it/tried to tame it/understand it - is fantastic. I think the stone monoliths and 4 toed statue are remnants of people that erected monuments to the island.

Oh, and the Black Pearl. I think that website has it wrong. I think the Pearl was sailing along quietly when the island suddenly appeared in the exact spot that the Pearl was sailing - hence it ended up on dry land in the middle of the island. Don't think that the electromagnetic energy of the island picked the ship up..

it says that the black pearl had a "very special" cargo on board..
maybe the cargo was magnetic!?

Yeah, I have to chime in here as well. Absolutely love the show - I can't remember anything better on TV. I'm still unclear about the black smoke monster. What the hell was that, and was the electromagnetic fence that was put up, put up to keep that out and why. So many questions, the show is sho deep, gotta love it.

Can't wait for tonight's episode...
