I'd second what folks have said about the adjustment period. There's a diff philosophy behind simple things like the way windows should be sized, launching apps, etc. I really didn't think OSX was all that special and actually found it kind of irritating for several months. Now when I'm on Windows at work I want it to work like OSX.

It's the ctrl, alt, etc. buttons being different that get me when using Live on 2 different systems. For general day to day stuff I don't really find OSX any better than XP. Just a little different. Oh, except OSX windows do that funky wobble thing when they reduce to an icon. Grand.

If my crappy PC at work only had Expose, I could work a lot faster. Perhaps Vista has something like this, but lo, the office world is shackled to XP.

PS I echo above comments- I do everything on my Macs with no problems. Internet all day etc. Could never do that on PC.

Of course you can, I should know cos I do.
There's a load of bollocks thrown around about both platforms, when in fact there is very little difference between them in terms of performance or stability. I support macs and pcs at work, I use a pc at home cos I'm not prepared to pay a premium price for a mac. You can make music using either, but a mac will cost a bit more.

My laptop, XP P4, 3.2ghz PC is used 7 days per week for music, accounting, publishing, communicating with a client base, CAD, surfing the web, demoing Software, forums, streaming NHL games etc.
I have 3 small programs that keep it in tip top shape.
1. PC Tools Spyware Doctor
2. CCleaner
3. Ultimate Disk Defrag.

It just doesn't miss a beat.

here is what I've found out recently...

if someone is into IT, maybe he will understand it better than me, but holy shit, there's something that even ASIO doesn't have! not to mention other drivers... Totally different API & audio routing better than in any MS system, which in theory makes better use of audio apps and hardware.

the advice I used to give was something like this:

If youre interested in computing in general, and dont mind a bit of reading and troubleshooting, then get a PC as its far better value. You also get lots more choice when it comes to peripherals and upgrades.

But if you particularly like the Mac Finder and you have no interest in learning about computers, then the Mac is generally easier to get shit done, and will protect you from the maelstrom of the underlying OS. This in itself is worth a premium to some folks, and I can understand that.

The security/virus issue is way overblown. A properly setup PC just doesnt contract viruses anymore, even if you live on Limewire.

I previously had an undernourished PC, so the comparison isn't a fair one. But, compared to my WinXP laptop, Ableton Live 7 works quite well on just my Mac Mini with only 2G ram and there are much faster Macs you can buy.

I just wish Ableton would come out with Ubuntu support so I could boot my MAC on Linux and take advantage of the impressive _free_ Music notation and other multimedia packages available in Ubuntu Studio.

Are they really worth the money?
It seems my duo core laptop just doesn't have the power to run Live and analog factory at the same time, let alone what I WANT to do.
Thinking of buying a macbook pro but the price aaarrrrrrgghh, it would be more than I paid for my last two vehicles.

You pay more up front for a Mac but what you get in return is a better quality machine, more modern design, a better OS, longer lifespan of usefulness, and greatly reduced chance of viruses and trojans. If you add up the extra costs of owning a PC such as bloatware, rampant viruses, constant security breeches, a patchworked inefficient and overly complicated OS, endless potential third party driver problems, and cheaper components. I believe you actually pay more in the end for a PC than a Mac.

The only thing a PC is better at than a Mac is gaming. But if I want to game I'll buy a 360 or a Playstation, not a PC.

how the fu** core duo is not enough for you? my friend uses live on a laptop with p4 1,5ghz 512 ram and he is doing well. Both in the studio and on the stage. Ofc he has lots of limitations but not that many to stop using waves in his studio
