It's real simple: Never say anything online that you wouldn't want your boss, your significant other, or the government reading. Because in practice you have no way of stopping it.

(And googling myself is entertaining because there are three moderately well-known people who share my name: Me, a stand-up comedian in California, and a film actor). So between us, Google shows nearly 60,000 pages.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

Because my address is on my website, you can look at my front door, or walk in 10ft gaps up and down my street looking 360deg.
Yeah, I noticed this in Australia too.

I though it would be an easy way for a thieving bastard to case out some gear on 'show us your setup' post and know exactly where someone lives.

It scared the shit out of me. 8O

Damn right to that. If the work gets done, why should they care?

An colleague of mine lost his job at age 54 as a result of stuff he posted on forums.

It started when he upset some nasty POS in a forum flame war and he called this guy a few names that he shouldn't have.

I never did find out all the details but by piecing together information from various sources the guy managed to track down his real name and address and his place of work. He then started phoning managers in the company, saying do you realise your employee uses the internet to liable people during working hours. The guy was really persistent phoning extension numbers at random and generally being a PITA.

To cut a long story short my colleague was suspended while they searched through his internet history, eventually they found a couple of posts where he had slagged off the company and he was sacked.

Because of his age the poor bloke never found another job and his life went into a downward spiral. Two years later he died of a heart attack.

So, yeah, be careful out there.
