I hope their rerun is better than the original. It works but you have to wait about 30 seconds for live and the turntables to sync up. In a live situation thats much to long to wait.Damon_Chambers wrote:over on www.djforums.com a few people have posted saying the red sound piece was a good unit. they recently did a limited re-run of the units. i had emailed them inquiring about purchasing it from an authorized dealer, and they replied and said the unit was out of production, but they were re-running it.
beatmatching live4 live to records
Here's what I've found works and allows you to keep quantize on:
1. Use tap tempo to get a simple beat loop to match as close as you can with the tempo of the record.
2. Stop live entirely (transport stop button).
3. Start live on the appropriate down-beat of what you're syncing to.
4. Adjust BPM by hand to keep things sync'ed. To simulate brushes, slightly increase/decrease the BPM for a moment and then return it to where you had it.
You do have to make sure you do corrections every once and awhile though.
I haven't tried it yet but it would be good to get a combo of a slider and a pitch bend going though a MIDI filter. The MIDI filter would send the value of the slider + the value of the pitch bend (with the middle as 0) to LIVE as one CC value. You could then use your slider to set the tempo and your pitch bend to do brushes (since it returns nicely to zero).

+ and - pitch bend buttons ( like on a cdj) would be nice.
I've tried using knobs and sliders on my oxygen8 keyboard but the values change way to harsh. I can get caught up or slowed down, but then I can't get close enough to the original value.

>> Speaking of pitch bend, I tried using the mod wheel (the one that returns to the middle when you let it go), but again it is to harsh with the amount it changes the value. When the wheel returns to the middle it changes the bpm from the original value to 80 ( from 128 for example). Is there a way to change this so when the wheel returns to the middle it goes back to the original value? --- this would be cool.
I use the bmp mirco from Redsound, the welfare version of the midi one, and it's spot on most of the time. But, the qwerty just doesn't cut it when you are playing in the dark. -- mouse wiggle, clicking on the bpm box and entering a new value
sorry for the ramble,

Why not work backwards and sync the decks to ableton? Use tap to get live close to your vinyl then run a click and adjust the vinyl accordingly, switch click off bring the channel up and trigger away. just like working the other way around periodic adjustments would have to be made but it would be much easier to match the decks to ableton than vise a versa.
If your mixer has four channels and your sound card has two outputs you could dedicate one channel as a click track, keep the fader down and the que up so the click is constantly running in your headphones.

You can change the tempo range for a midi controller, go to the master track in the arrange and get the tempo automation. you have 2 boxes for max/min tempo. If you chose from 160 to 170, that would be the range of your midi slider/knob.
It works great for mixing with ttables. You can set to the +/- 8% pitch of the 1200 and that is what you will have on your midi slide
.
I do what psilosly described. it is easy and works great.
If I remember right, there is a Plastikman version of the Xone 92 with "nudge" and Live control.
One more thing you might want is to have a position offset, so you can "move" your Live track, as you touch a record. With tempo, you ALWAYS need to fo back and forth, speed up and slow back down when you get your mix.
Check what I posted in the feature wishlist under "TRACK DELAY". It works great. I will bring the post back up in the list.
About the redsound, I have the cycloops, a loop sampler with the same beat detect engine as the microsync. It does work well, but it is not as fast as moving Live's tempo and delay. Also, you will always end up Pushing Live, like a record, to get the exact position. the tempo is only half the story. Also having Live running all the time, if you want to skip the matching process, is not so nice for managing your clips and songs.

The Microsync has three tempo ranges, so you can optimize it for regular, downtempo, and DnB. I've used it with DnB and my mainstay, breaks, with no problems at all. For some reason it seems to do better with breakbeat stuff than simple 4/4 songs. Weird....

Ive used a Red Sound Voyager with Live in the past, got sware version 2.06 in it, but the pitch tracking system is too harsh! It's a GREAT unit but to be able to push and pull manually and trim tempo offset manually would be the greatest. I usually end up using a yamaha RM1X to trigger loops, adjust controllers (filter freq, supatrigga granularity etc
) and of course set the temp as you get MIDI clock out with a nice big control to twiddle and 10ths of a BPM on up/down keys - works a treat!
PS - DJing Breaks - Red Sound works well with breaks and dnb but you need the version 2 software really.
