Is there an audio maximizer in Ableton live 7?
Hi guys I'm trying to master some of my songs and I need to bring up the volume. I would like to know if there is an audio maximizer kind of mastering tool in Ableton live 7 itself like the product sonic maximizer http://www.bbesound.com/products/maxim/newplugin.asp
Right now I'm using the mastering tape boost under Mastering and helper - Audio effects. I just like to know Am I missing out on using something better or is this the best tool I can use provided by Ableton live 7. Also if not, any free plug-in tools for mac out there that does the job? Thanks

My advice is not to use one.

There is pleanty of other information out there on mastering as well.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
I beleive in dynamics. When the music is pushed up and "everything" is loud, it just gets tiring to your ears.
Plus, if your mastering it yourself you will never get it right. You have too much "history" with your track to get it right.
I think the DIY is fine for demo purposes. But you should leave it to a professional. And if your demo gets picked up the label should pay for the mastering anyway.
Just my thoughts.
Hope the link helps.

Shit I forgot to tell you...
If you want to DIY...
There is no maximizer in Live.
But I think under the Mastering presets there is a Rack that basically makes one.
Otherwise, you'll have to make a Multiband Dynamics rack yourself.
Use 3 chains (or more). And drop an EQ then a Compressor in each.
Now set the crossover points for each eq in each chain e.i. low, mid,hi.
I would use the EQ8 and use the low pass for the low. A lowpass and high pass for the mid (you can control the bandwith of the mid section this way).
And of coarse a hi pass for the high freqs.
Then addjust the compressor to maximum gain reduction and adjust the threshold to taste. And finally the attack and release parameters.
Again hope this helps.
Now, that will be one million dollars please.

And, psssst, this is against the mastering-is-not-for-everyone-doctrine.
I'm gonna second the recommendation of Yohng's limiter, in the hopes that your needs will get met and this thread won't become yet another "never put a limiter on your master channel!" thread....

I don't recomend using a maximizer at all for a couple of reasons.
Maybe instead try PSP's Vintage warmer/saturator as a Multiband Compression Unit.Fisrst of all it will get your sound up to +3-+6 db as the comercial trackz (which is pretty sweet for a DIY mastering)
And yes If you are boosting anything, make sure all your frequencies are right.Use High and Low Pass filters or EQ as well.I've heard that everithing that's under 300 Hz (kickz, sub bass etc>) should be set to mono (Utility Plug In in Live). But than again I am no mastering or audio engeneer so try a couple of thing and see 4 yourself.I hope i helped even a lil' bit.

There's a limiter coming in Live 8 - looking forward to it cuz it's probably very resource friendly - vs. some plugs out there.
I for one find using a limiter crucial for live use. Just having it on the master track without and gain and just making sure transients don't peak over and grind out nasty digital distortion - which is really great for pa systems - nawt!
