switching midi instruments causes loss of output

When an instrument in a midi track is replaced with a new midi instrument the midi signal is shown as being received in the clip view but not on the track. Sound also disappears. This problem happens often but not every time. Is it a bug or am I just asking too much of my single processor G4?
