Create a MIDI channel (audio channels probably fail the same way but I haven't tried it) with a long instrument chain -- too long to fit horizontally in the display. When that happens, you can use the little icon in the lower right corner to scroll through the chain. Scroll all the way to the right.
Now hot-swap this chain with an instrument with a very short chain. Even though the new chain will fit entirely in the display, after the swap you will be scrolled so that the instrument is invisible; you have to scroll back manually to see it.
