how to switch tracks to trigger different sounds?

Post by pirco » Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:53 pm

I'm using LIVE to trigger drum sounds (drum racks and battery and addictive drums, etc.) via MIDI from my Roland TD-10 vDrum set.

during performances, I need to play different drum sounds during one song. so far, I've been setting up my different sounds on individual tracks (track 1=battery samples, track 2=addictive drums samples, track 3=drumrack, etc.).
with a midi foot controller, I am able to "turn on and off" individual tracks by assigning the "solo" button with the foot controller.
however, that means that all tracks are active and it overloads my processor.
so I started looking for other solutions. changing the "monitor" to "off" works but that means I have to click twice on my footcontroller: once to turn the new track's monitor to "In" and the old track's monitor to "off".
changing the "midi from" dropdown has the same issue plus it takes a second to re-assign the input.
my goal is to achieve track-switching with ONE press on the foot controller and do it on-the-fly.

please note that one of my tracks may get fed an audio signal (so putting different samples on different octaves in the drum rack won't work).

anyway, I'm wondering if there are others out there who dealt with this issue or have an idea of how to switch between different sounds/samples during one song (quickly and easily).

thanks!

in case anyone cares, I found my solution and it was pretty easy: just arm the track whose sounds I want to play and set all monitors to "auto".
that way, the signal will only come through that one track (reducing processor resources) and I can use my foot controller to switch between tracks (all of which have different sounds) by arming them (making sure in the preferences that each track can only be armed exclusively).

cheers.

cool.

you can also put the midi devices into a rack and use the chain selector to switch between them.

I didn't get the part about using audio instead of midi. :?

ah. I shall try that. I'm using drum racks already so that won't interfere with using instrument racks (I suppose that's what you mean by rack?).
I'm also concerned that too many midi devices in one rack will eat up processor power. or. oh. wait.. I guess if I turn of a chain, it won't require processor power. ha.

thanks.

oh, and the part about using audio wasn't meant to be "instead of midi". I was just saying that on track 1 I have my original audio signal fed from my drum module so I can also play an "acoustic drumset" while I have a midi drumset on track 2 and 3, for example.

thanks again.
