Melodies
Re: Melodies
wherever the fuck they're from, I think you get my fucking point
Re: Melodies
My Bad. No, Daft Punk was NOt what I had in my mind as their music is obviously melodic. (whether they just stole the melodies and dropped some sidechained beats is beyond the scope of this discussion)
Sorry for the confusion. Carry on.

Re: Melodies
If you think of kompakt being JUST bleepy, you might wanna check out Justus Köhnke.

Re: Melodies
I hear nothing melodic in that Justus Köhnke youtube. It's horribly blippy and entirely devoid of any musical soul.

Nothing...I was just testing to see if you were actually listening to what I was saying, given that I didn't say Kompakt WAS all bleeps, merely that SOME stuff from Kompakt can sound as though it didn't have melody.
Now that you're paying attention, back to the conversation.

Re: Melodies
To each his/her own, but I definitely disagree. That track is gorgeous! I thought the textural melody worked really nicely with the zoom-in on the building as well. Pretty cool stuff.nebulae wrote:I hear nothing melodic in that Justus Köhnke youtube. It's horribly blippy and entirely devoid of any musical soul.
EDIT: and now I read your message above
Re: Melodies
as we speak of Kompakt.
for me their golden years are over. they had a huge impact on what we call
clicks and cuts / minimal or whatever deadbeaten word you have. listen
to the early releases. some great treasures. from these days only a few of
the labels kept their quality: Background, Perlon, Telegraph to name a few IMO
one of my (when not THE) favourite on kompakt:
Closer Musik - One,Two,Three (no gravity) Timeless!

i think there is the right time and place for most of the stuff being produced nowadays. there are horrible parties with really boring music and people going nuts because its sooo *minimal* (read: no emotion at all, even tough there might be melodic parts involved).
it all relates to the context music is played in me thinks.

Re: Melodies
^ agreed!
Also, the track you posted is really nice and beautifully melodic. Couple that with Gui's latest release, and you can see that even Kompakt is heading in a very melodic direction. Which is cool

Re: Melodies
I actually find a lot of Autechre's earlier stuff very melodic, it's melody spread across different sounds.
A good thing to try with that "cheesy melody" is to do similar, spread it across lots of different noises and places in the mix. One note a bleep, another a piano note or even a pitched drum, anything. I like cheesy melodies, especially over simple, childish chord patterns. It always cracks me up when a fuck off beat and bassline comes in and it all fits together into something light hearted, (sort of anti-dubstep
)
This sort of thing is why I really miss old fashioned midi functions like "explode by key" which would split a melody track into different single midi tracks.

Re: Melodies
Sometimes I'll do what Martyn said and write one melody and spread the midi file across a bunch of different sounds, then just erase certain notes in the various files. Sometimes it sounds like crap, other times it works out well.

Nice idea, will try this out along with starving student's suggestion of going crazy with tiny deletions in the arrange view.JoshR wrote:Sometimes I'll do what Martyn said and write one melody and spread the midi file across a bunch of different sounds, then just erase certain notes in the various files.
