ABLETON AND PRODUCING
ABLETON AND PRODUCING
Ok, just a real basic question. Strictly for producing tracks, do most of you generally use the session view or the arrangement view. I'm sure some may use both, but generally speaking what do you use.I ask because i met with a producer and he strictly uses the arrangement view for production purposes. For him he feels it speeds up his workflow, and kinda forces him to get on with his song! Me personnaly, i've gotten used to the session view, but I get carried away with building loops all day. I rarely use the scenes for production. Anyways, hope someone has some advice . thanx.
Re: ABLETON AND PRODUCING
i started of using the arrangement view only, dont know why but i just did.
Now i use the session view untill i'm pleased with all the loops i have, then record those in for a basic composittion and then start editing.
I feel like it helps me tweak the sounds untill i cant ga any further with them, dont know but i seems better, easier.
Also (wich i know for a fact) it helps me to check out certain fills etc, like when i have a bass and at the end of # of bars, there's a variation, i just click stop on the drums to hear what i would sound like, check it out with or without the other loops playing etc.
just got kinda messy and chaotic when doing the whole thing in arrangement view, so i started using clips, and now i'm hooked

Same as Thomas. I like to kick things off in the session view. Build some scenes and jam for a while to get a feel for the track. I usualy take a break after this and then come back to see if I still like what I did. If so I lay it out in the arrangement view and start to add any new elements, fx, mixing etc.

obviously
I dare to say it's one of the most important things that make ableton to awesome, it's just such an easy way to make tracks, and actually finish them
or never finish them, but play them live

Re: ABLETON AND PRODUCING
i use session view to jam out basic ideas. then i record them into arrangement and start editing and add elements as i go.
what i LOVE about ableton is the ability to use the session view to jam things out live. it's what makes it different than any other DAW out there for me. keeps me from getting bored.
i do know people who have used session view and just recorded live and that was it. but i like the editing capabilities, myself.

Re: ABLETON AND PRODUCING
Thanx for some great feedback. I have to agree with you all that the session view is so beneficial in alot of ways. I spent last night forcing myself to use the arrange view and like thomas said it get's cluttered pretty fast, for me anyways. But hey, whatever works for you!
Re: ABLETON AND PRODUCING
the way i worked out my songs before i got live was that i had my acoustic guitar and vocals - made up an entire song on the spot, but make interesting timings and chord changes. Then I would use markers to say where the chord changes are, and then flesh it out track by track. I thought session mode would be good for me but from watching tutes on youtube about using arrange mode, I have decided it would be the best for me. I'm not sure how all of you work or what style you write in, but this is by far the best way for my creative drive. You can set arrange into loop mode and do your midi loops, just as you can do in session... Say I put a drum track in, loop, drag it out far, and then improv with acoustic and vocals. Go anywhere I feel like. Then chart out my changes, start writing lyrics out of my babbly voice and its melody, fine tune the drums, add synths, or whatever i feel like, - whatever i want. This method enabled me to write a song every night within the time span of 1hr -4hrs giving me a total of 17 full length albums that i was pleased with in the past year.
After checking out ableton's arrange mode, I know now i can arrange things even quicker and easier than the other host i was using (mackie tracktion) and once i get my studio computer a new harddrive (just bought live and hd died on me)... I will be able to effortlessly use this workflow, making even more expressive music than before.
I am also thinking maybe playing live shows with minimal stuff in session mode with my eeepc... making up stuff as i go.
I hope this helps somehow
ps here are the tutes that really opened my mind to the amazing arrange mode

with the way you can copy and paste and manipulate the parts of the song, i could say pick out a great part of my scratch track improv and loop it as a chorus, and then copy it over to other places. its brilliant.

Re: ABLETON AND PRODUCING
i only use the arrangement view for nondestructive editing. I guess I should get more into it.
it just feels more soulful to me that arrangement. Yea strange i know.
