[amo] 8.014b most sluggish, unreliable beta so far

Post by thumpmonk » Tue Mar 03, 2009 5:33 pm

Sessions with many 3rd party plugins that opened and ran fine in previous betas are very crash-prone and sluggish in 8.014b. I wish I could isolate what causes it, but in general its very choppy and disc access is constantly sparking the little D light to illuminate. These sessions did not have this problem in previous betas.

Its so sluggish that I find if I move notes in the MIDI editor, release the mouse button and move the cursor, Live is so sluggish that it fails to register my release and drags the notes and deposits them closest to wherever I've moved the cursor.

Also, the problem of floating plugin and video windows grabbing the application focus and disabling use of the spacebar for stop/start is still present making things take that much longer as I have to mouse click back into the main window after each tweak made to a plugin or anytime I resize the video window.

It feels like the program is getting worse.

some people are having some success fixing speed issues by uninstalling the latin percussion pack. if you haven't installed it yet, i can't help...but i can agree that beta 14 is a big step backward.

Hi Tone Deft. I read the sticky. Can you be specific (maybe put in a whole $0.05) as to what's not buggy about what I reported (constant crashing and sluggishness)? I'm not being smarmy, truly, I am interested in being a helpful part of the beta. I've participated in every open beta for Live over the years. I just don't see what in the sticky doesn't apply to my comment. I guess it could be in discussion forum, but it seems to be buggy compared to the previous betas. The fact that I can't lock down why its behaving this way doesn't make it any less a bug. I'm seeing it across multiple sessions with various amounts of 3rd arty plugs running. I email the crash reports and am not sure what else I can do other than report it.

Scientist, I'm uninstalling Latin now. Hope that changes it. Thanks for the tip.

mr.tone is most likely just referring to keeping it to one bug per post, and making sure you've searched and added to an existing bug reporting instead of repeating. no biggie.

the way I understand it is this:
sticky wrote: How can I report a bug that I can see but not describe easily?
In Live's Help menu you find an entry 'Do Bug Reporting Snapshot'. This creates a Live Pack, much like the Crash Live Packs mentioned above. Start Live, do what is necessary to demonstrate the bug, select 'Do Bug Reporting Snapshot' and email the resulting .alp file (created on your Desktop) to [email protected]

Which information should I include with a bug report posted in this forum?
A most useful bug report consists of a step-by-step instruction how to reproduce the bug (be sure to include all steps even if they don't seem to matter) followed by information about the version of Live, the operating system and the hardware you use (computer, audio interface, midi controllers etc.). You can put the OS and hardware information in your forum signature so that it is always appended.
you definitely fit #1 but not #2.

in fixing a bug the FIRST step is to reproduce it. if you can't do that you can't address the bug.

you know you've found a bug when you can go through a specific list of steps and get the SAME result every time. then you can show that list of steps to someone (like a programmer at Ableton) and they can get the SAME results.

saying that Live is sluggish isn't something that can be acted upon directly. a programmer in Berlin can't sit down at his desk, open beta 14, notice it's sluggish and fix the problem.

I am of the ilk that it's better to report too many things than under-report, but I also appreciate an easy to reproduce bug report (at my own job, I don't work for Ableton.)

really, it's up to Ableton, they can move threads if they want, my morning Red Bull is kicking in and I'm just typing away. I love typing when I'm all speedy.

Heh, yeah. I'm all coffee'd up as well. After a crash I was consistently unable to open the song when Live would ask me if I wanted to recover. I guess that's the best reproduction I can offer. Ultimately, I just declined and opened the session from the recent menu. I lost some work, but it was open at least.

Good point. No programmer will be able to do anything with "umm, my computer looked at me funny after I installed .0814b", etc. I'll attempt to reproduce and describe more fully next time.

Hi,

Here, I can only ask: is it better in beta 17?
