Need Vista Laptop FOR AUDIO Recommendations
Need Vista Laptop FOR AUDIO Recommendations
I need a new laptop and it needs to run Vista (long story, not relevant, don't post telling me I'm making a mistake). So... I've read a bunch of posts from folks who've said they're running Vista on laptops FOR AUDIO PERFORMANCE with success. Please let me know which laptops you're using. I've looked at most of the major audio laptop manufacturers ADK, Sonica (which was just bought by ADK), Rain. What other systems are folks using successfully with Vista. Also, any links to sites for configuring Vista for audio would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Check hp pavillion dv7 series,
the specs are amazing for the money you
paying.

Re: Need Vista Laptop Recommendations
imho, the nicest windows laptops which are best built are the lenovo thinkpad T series.
They aren t cheap, but you get what you pay for. They have a VERY good warranty and
they officially support vista AND xp.
so they will run with vista, and if you get into serious problems with vista for doing
music, you can setup a double boot system with vista and xp and can be sure that all xp drivers are easily available. This is NOT the case with most other Vista Laptops.
my 2 cents

Re: Need Vista Laptop Recommendations
Ahh ok, so maybe I need to clarify. I'm not worried about laptops that can run Vista, I'm worried about laptops that can run Vista for Audio. I'm interested in folks who are currently using laptops running Vista for audio performance (Ableton Live, MaxMSP, etc.) and can say that the hardware is functioning well with the OS without significant latency issues. I've read a bunch of websites talking about all the stuff that can be turned off for Vista and will go this route. I cannot dual-boot, that is a discussion of running audio in WinXP which I already know I can do.
Successful Vista performers post your hardware!
Thanks.

Re: Need Vista Laptop Recommendations
I have always used Toshiba laptops - I DJ and do Live sets off my laptop. My current laptop is a Core2 Duo running Vista 64bit and it runs without any problems whatsoever. The only problem you might encounter is sound card drivers for Vista 64bit. That, however, is not Vista's or the laptop's fault, but a problem with the sound card manufacturer. My Quad Core desktop runs Vista 32bit and no problems at all either. I have not encountered any problem running Vista regarding audio performance. To me, this Vista phobia is a little silly.oddible wrote:Ahh ok, so maybe I need to clarify. I'm not worried about laptops that can run Vista, I'm worried about laptops that can run Vista for Audio. Re: Need Vista Laptop FOR AUDIO Recommendations
Vista is about 80% of the way there now. You still get a small performance hit running Vista compared to running XP on the exact same hardware, but that margin has been steadily shrinking over the last year.
If you want to wring every last bit of power out of the laptop though, definitely go dual boot XP/Vista, and use XP for audio. There are a few associated benefits with running a dedicated partition just for music anyway.

That is very true. The more streamlined your machine for a specific task, the better performance (and less bug headaches) you will have - no matter what platform or OS. In fact my production desktop and my gig laptop never connect to the internet and are dedicated to audio / video production / performances.adventurepants_ wrote:There are a few associated benefits with running a dedicated partition just for music anyway.
