Firewire Interface for MBP intel

Post by feerhoof » Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:46 pm

I have decided to upgrade my interface (cant really go any lower since I currently own a M-Audio Audiophile USB  )

I think I should make use of my FW in and have been considering the Edirol FA-66 or FA-101 ( the difference is only £70) but when surfing the web I saw Tapco has a pretty neat Firewire interface with 4x6 for only £99! I could also get a tapco mixer with half the edirol cost!

Anyone here with experience on both products? Could anyone draw me a parallel between them?

I just want to get multi ins and out to have my guitar and tape machine going into different channels and having different outs as well!

I am currently running Live 6 and GleetchLab, and have been thinking of giving lloopp a try!

what I play? ambient experiments perfomances...

thanks in advance!

From what I've heard, Tapco is decent. It's owned by Mackie. If you're looking for a step up from an M-Audio interface, I doubt you'll find it with the Tapco. You'll get a step up in I/O, but not necessarily in sound + build quality.

A video person reviewed the Tapco on our site:

presonus firebox is pretty decent, and not too expensive ... definitely a step up from M-Audio. Works great on a Mac. Driver is provided by core audio within OSX, and so it is true plug and play ... plug the sucker in and you are good to go. 4 ins, 6 outs, rugged construction, decent Mic/instrument preamps, low latency, flexible routing ...

(and no, I am not an employee of presonus, I just bought one at the weekend, and used it in a club for the first time yesterday, and was well impressed)

If you can't get an Ultralite, I've heard the Presonus Firebox is a good interface, they had overheating issues a few years back but I believe this has been sorted out. You should think about it though, the Ultralite is a great investment, I've had mine for over two years now, built like a tank, I've gigged it, used it at home, done Live recordings etc. No problems whatsoever, it sounds great and it ALWAYS works. I'll probably not by another interface until firewire becomes obsolete.

Alesis i/o14 or 26. Quality build, great sound, and inserts on all channels which is my favourite feature (I have some outboard processors). I have the 26 and it's easy to set up and very sturdy and reliable. It's FW'd into my MBP.

+1 for the firebox. If you want more in and outs, check the Firepod.

thanks for all replies,

I am currently checking the prices on the firebox v. edirol.

I know Motu is top notch and i would go for it had I not other $$ priorities right now!

cheers,

I would highly suggest the Duet still. The Analog to Digital converters are vastly superior too anything under $1500. You WILL hear a huge difference in sound, and isn't that more important than routing convenience? I would rather unplug and replug an instrument than my recordings sound like a blanket has been thrown over them.

That is my 2 cents. Its your music. :)

I hear you, and I agree with quality over convenience 100%

but what I am looking are tools for live perfomance and gigs and I need 3 ins at least!
