Crackles with Emu 0404 Macbook

Post by 8bit » Sat Mar 07, 2009 3:38 pm

Hi,

Wonder if anyone is having issues with the EMU 0404 usb interface on a macbook. I'm getting crackles with anything over 40% of cpu.

DId you turn off wifi ?

What latency are you running the card at ??

Do you have the most up to date drivers? - check E-Mu's website.

What are the specs on your Macbook ?

More information required before we can make diagnostic assumptions

Hi and thanks for the reply, you're faster at getting back than EMU support : P

I've turned wifi off and here's a screen grab of my settings in ableton preferences

Any help or ideas to try gratefully received.

Try increasing your buffer size until the crackling stops.

Hi 8bit

While Live is running, open Activity Monitor (in Utilities Folder in Applications Folder) & let it show active processes & sort by % CPU.

Anything suspicious maxing out your CPU?

That's interesting, ableton shows around 53% of CPU whilst os x activity monitor shows it using 103.9% CPU so i guess the ableton processor monitor has a bug in it?

Screen shot here:

I was looking forward to trying the suggestions from EMU support but they sent me a link on XP tuning tips - duh!

Any other hints, tips, things to try most welcome.

Well 53% of total CPU is not far off 104% of 2 cores is it? What in live is using all the CPU? What makes you suspect the audio interface?

Ah I follow your logic -104 actually means 53! That would be fine if I had one processor switched on but I have two.

To begin with I thought it was a fault with the audio interface but it seems like the Ableton processor monitor is to blame and needs halving to be accurate. Ah well its freeze like crazy and keep below 40% in future!

Hi 8bit,

for Live CPU meter vs. Activity Monitor read this (Friedemanns' 2nd Post):

http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=110780

"Although both meters show '%' values, they are not really comparable."

The Activity Monitor thing was more about, if something else (like an unfinished printjob etc.) is maxing out your CPU.
