slow gui.!! WHY???

after just opening a few vsts in ableton. the gui seems to be slow and the cpu level seems resonable like around 8%. this is my setup:

Quadcore, 8gb ram, x64 vista, emu1212m soundcard.

my computers works well with other daw hosts. i just dont know why its slow as hell in ableton just after a few vsts. the gui is just slow. like for example when i look at WAVES L2 to monitor the db level. the gui is really slow. even when i drag down a knob or something in the vst is slow. ive tried editting my soundcard settings but it doesnt help. is there a way to make ableton faster :-s. even the browser is slow as hell!.

i love ableton but i cant seem to get it to work well. please help

If that happens during playback then my guess is that you turned off Aero. Live is unuseable without Aero. Check CPU load via Task-Manager, Live's CPU meter doesn't report load created by its GUI.

If this is what causes your issues then the only way to workaround that is turning on Aero. This again will lead to slight performance drop-downs because of Live's lack of Vista's MMCSS and Aero running at the same priority as Live's Audio and Midi threads. To workaround that and get full performance you need to turn Live's priority to Realtime via Task-Manager.

The drawback of using Realtime priority is that Live then takes over your system and thus any CPU overload or hanging of Live will cause your whole system to get stuck. So watch out what you are doing. Because of that you should only turn to Realtime priority if needed (try it first to check wether it makes a difference with your setup).


If yours is not a Classic/Aero issue then it could be a Quadcore issue. Try turning off Multicore support and/or try setting CPU affinity to only two cores via Task-Manager.


Another guess would be that you are running Vista 64 while Live and your plugins are 32-bit processes that are run within an emulation layer of Vista 64. That can cause problems (eventhough I had Live run on Vista 64 without seeing any restrictions myself, but I did not test that indeep).

I'm having the exact same issue.

Vista 64, 8 gigs ram, Core2Duo, FA-101 audio. All worked well and good for the first two months with Live 7. Lately, however, Live's startup will take forever, opening a set (that was previously fast) takes forever, even things like changing what in/output an AUX is routed through is painfully slow. Slow enough that it's unusable. CPU utilization according to Taskman is 8-10%, even during the pause that occurs after each and every click. Memory usage is fine. Aero is running smoothly with no problems.

I'm trying to identify any other changes to the system, but the only change to my knowledge has been the installation of a Netflix "play now" plugin for IE8, which I believe is just a DRM layer for the player. Shouldn't effect my ASIO, or resources available to Live.

Any other ideas?

Same shit, vista x64, win7 x64... maybe its about 64 bits?
