Where does Ableton just not cut it?

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Mon Mar 09, 2009 9:49 am

I'm interested to hear in what cases the majority of people resort to vsts and third-party effects when the built-in Ableton components just don't cut it. I've heard a lot of people complain that Ableton's reverb is sub-standard and I wonder if anyone feels the same about any of Live's other effects. Also, are there any KEY elements to your mix that Live doesn't even cater for?

- amp simulation. guitar rig or a pod give me faster convincing results than tweaking live's efx.

- looper (but this will be resolved with live 8)

- limiter (again, will be in live 8)

- multiband compression (and again, will be in live 8)

I want to create a single MIDI file with multiple channels in it, so that I can upload it into a hardware sequencer that demands such a file. I can read these files in Live with no problem, but as far as I can tell, there is no way to export more than a single channel at a time as a separate MIDI file.

i will just agree that using live to process a guitar is not fun. I'm beta testing 8, and the overdrive is TOTALLY a step up, but still not an awesome guitar tone making machine.

As in, it won't replace guitar rig or similar.

...And it won't possibly be there in the future IMHO. :(

MIDI in general, IMO. Trying to automate Battery 3 is a frickin' nightmare...

IMO Ableton need to focus on the core usability of the programme. We need workflow improvements, not more toys.

+1 (although the 'looper' is going to solve MANY problems for me... LIVE DRUM LOOPS!)

+1. This could even be implemented in track groups where there is a button in the mixer that sends the waveform view to the "group master" waveform window, where it can be stacked vertically, or split horizontally. I'm sure the Serato partnership will probably bring something like this about.
