There's no limit in Recycle at all, though I find that anything more than 16 or so gets difficult to work with, personally.
However in my opinion using Phatmatik is limited compared to using actual midi files as clips in Ableton.
The advantage of using midi is that one can capture a groove from the Recycle midi file, and use it for the lead, bassline, secondary rythm elements, and so forth with otherinstruments. Also, the different patterns can be launched with clips.
For just rearranging beats, phatmatik is pretty damn good though. Won't use it myself, but I can see it's utility.

This is a flipping genius idea. I mean serioulsy. You sir have a brain the size of jupiter. I am going to buy recycle right now. This is ace ace ace. I can just come up with beats in my head , sing them and then use a drum kit with the midi timing. Why the hell didnt i think of this!!!
Try reflex from www.basementarts.de if you dont like phatmatik pro

Funny - I had a concept for a track that I never took to production...Emissary wrote:deepdirtydub wrote:what i'd like to do is beatbox something and record it .. then take the timing from that beatbox and use it as a template for the midi timing of everything else or instead of beatboxing mpd padding something realtime and doing the same. am i nuts? im assuming that playing something on the pads and recording the midi hits for it is sort of limited as far as getting a good feel.

A beatbox would start out, and I would gradually increase the complexity of the beats by using individual hits sampled and recycled. Then, after a break, a replacement of the exact same rythms, but with a 808 sound pallette. The second break would see a call n' answer duet between the beatbox and the 808. Kind of a homage to old school using new school tech.
I'm never gonna get off my ass on this one, so if anybody wants to use the idea, it's yours.

One of Recycle's premiere advantages is the slice dynamics - a great way to "compress" or "expand", really - since it's not dependant on the threshold, you can really get some hi-hats small transient sounds and quieter sounds to jump out of a drum loop. Make's 'em real punchy too. For beats, find that I don't use normal dynamic effects as much as I did before, if I recycle the samples first.elemental wrote:yeah, although at first i thought I could ditch recycle, for tightness and flexibility with beats it cant be beat.

Using a .rex sample in Live4
Yo,
I am trying to use a rex sample in Live, through battery. But the key on the piano roll plays the whole sample, I just wanna plays seperate slices and have a key 4 each slice, and mash up the drum loop and cut it up, y'no!? Anyhelp wud be wicked, Cheerz.

I can think of two possible problems that might be occurring.suff wrote:Yo,

1. You have all the samples, each in different cells within Battery, but mapped to the same key. Re-map them to different keys, and Bob's your uncle.
2. More likely, your sample from Recycle was exported as a single .wav or .aif and now you're playing it in one cell as an entire thing. If you export a wave in Recycle, there's a checkbox or something (I am at a different computer right now, can't confirm this) that exports the audio file as a bunch of different slices as opposed to one recycled audio file. Make sure that you're exporting individual slices as individual audio files.
Also, I would suggest that once you get your samples (note the plural) into Battery, you should ensure that they are in different cells, and that they are mapped to keys properly.
ANOTHER OPTION:
Download SuperTrigga (or is it SupaTrigger?) from SmartElectronics. It will do wonders for mangling beats, and it's a good automated means of doing what you want to do.
