[frs].. getting Live 7 and Live 8 beta libraries to coexist
8b17 on Windows XP seems to make it difficult to relocate the library. If I tell it to use Ableton\BetaLibrary, it seems to put some files there but others in the parent folder. If I try to relocate the entire library to another top-level folder, it fails because when it tries to rename the top-level folder, it can't because there's a file open (presumably one of the log files in the Bug Reporting folder).
What's the recommended way to get Live 7 to use Ableton\Library and Live 8 to use Ableton\BetaLibrary at the same time? Or is it better to move all the Live 7 stuff somewhere else entirely?

Re: Trouble getting Live 7 and Live 8 beta libraries to coexist
Hi,
the Live 8 Beta should automatically use the folder Ableton\BetaLibrary for its library. Did you change the library at some point to a different location manually or did Live 8 choose a different location on its own?

I did not know that it would automatically use Ableton\BetaLibrary, so when I installed it for the first time I explicitly specified a different top-level folder for the library.Friedemann wrote:Hi,

I subsequently tried to move the library to Ableton\BetaLibrary and have had a world of trouble.
What I did was to create an empty folder named Ableton\BetaLibrary and then selected that folder when I was asked for the destination for the library. It appears that when I do that, Live quietly changes the folder name to Ableton (i.e. it drops the \BetaLibrary) and then, the next time I start it, somehow installs a bunch of content in both the top-level Ableton folder and in Ableton\BetaLibrary.
Moreover, if I try to move the library folder away from Ableton, it fails, saying it cannot rename Ableton to Ableton-0. I suspect the reason is that it opens a folder named "Ableton\Bug Reporting" and you can't rename a folder while something in it is open.

Hi,
In Live 8 you should never be asked where to put the library (in contrast to Live 7), but you can move the library
or create an alternative one in the preferences (Browse button next to the Library Location chooser). Is this what you did? But then Live should have asked you whether you want to move the existing library to the new location.

When I installed Live 8 beta for the first time, the installation process asked me where to put the library, and I told it "Live 8 library".Friedemann wrote:Hi,

Subsequently I tried to use the Library Location chooser to move the Live 8 library to Ableton\BetaLibrary. It quietly changed the location to Ableton (!), then asked me if I wanted to update the (Live 7) installation I found in that library. I said no, and it proceeded to install thousands of files anyway, trashing my live 7 library. Fortunately I had a backup.
After restoring from the backup, I launced Live 7 and moved my library to Live7lib. Then I reinstalled Live 8. After that, the library chooser said that my Live 8 library was in Ableton (not Ableton\BetaLibrary). I tried to move it to Ableton\BetaLibrary and it said I could not move it to anything located inside Ableton. So I tried to move it to Live8lib and it failed, saying it could not rename Ableton to Ableton-0.
So now I have my Live 7 library in Live7lib and my Beta 8 library in Ableton, and I do not know how to move it.

What happens if you go to the preferences and choose new location? Is the Library not moved to this new location?

In Beta 8, a dialog box pops up saying something similar to "Cannot rename Ableton to Ableton-0" and the library does not move.Friedemann wrote:What happens if you go to the preferences and choose new location? Is the Library not moved to this new location?

Could you please send the logfile Log.txt from Live's preferences folder to [email protected]?
(You can also just start Live 8, select Do Bug Reporting Snapshot from the help menu and send the resulting .alp file)
