core i7 and ableton compatibility

Post by nasr » Wed Mar 18, 2009 12:17 am

now i have been looking and looking, and it seemed like a pretty obvious one to be in the forum, but there is no clear answer, or atleast i havent found one... i am not really sure if its a good idea to build an new daw with the i7 core in it seen as most of my productions a fairly live based... from what i read i cant seem to gather if the core i7 had a problem running with live? or if its the 64 bit operating system?

if it was, the 64 bit o/s , would it possible to have an i7 pc running a 32bit os, and if so, will live see any benifit ? or would it rather be better to buy a quad core running live on a 32 bit o/s?

thanks heaps for the help ...

just go for what you can afford. A quad core duo is going to give you more power than %99 of Live users are ever going to use anyway, so I dont think the extra %30 youll get from the I7 is important. I7 isnt good value for money yet, but it is powerful. Ive not read anything of substance (from people who know what theyre talking about anyway)to suggest there is any incompatibility with Live and Nehalem.

thanks for your reply, i have also been posting on studio-central forums... i'm sure there some of you here who no a guy by the name of 'Nanashiwanderer' his one of the moderators, and a f@#king great one at that...really responsive with questions... he even took the time to personalise me a build based on what i said my need were :

- heavy on soft sytnhs
- heavy on vst plugins
- small amount of outboard euipment
- $1300 ($ us) budget

and this is what he came up with ;

Antec Sonata Elite
Corsair CMPSU-520-HX
Scythe S-flex E 120mm Case fans
Zalman 9700NT w/Arctic Silver 5
Intel Core 2 DUO E8400 3.00GHz w/1333MHz 2x6mb Cache
2x1GB DDR-3 1333MHz Crucial CL9-9-9-24 1.5Volt Memory
2x640GB 7200rpm Western Digital w/32mb Cache
Pioneer DVR-116BDK 20x
HIS ATI RADEON 2600XT
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP3

now that came to $1100 or close to anyway

For 1300$ I'd highly recommend just going with a Core 2 Quad 9650. It'll hold its own against the 2.66GHz i7 920 anyways. If you overclock the 9650 it will beat it.

thought this build may come in handy for some... seen as i'm sure alot of people are using ableton as there main sequencer, and more then likely have similar needs to that of mine...

would love to get some feedback.. i am personally going to go for the core 2 quad ... wondering if anyone thinks i should bump up the ram whilst i am there??

sorry if i went way off topic
