Ableton7 unresponsive following midi controller installation

Post by robbiePie » Wed Mar 18, 2009 11:22 pm

Hi guys, great forum.
This is my first post. Hope its not too long. I'm trying to be detailed...

I just recently purchased and installed a korg padkontrol after deciding the mpd24 was not expressive enough. Following installation of the controller, UVI soundbank, and lounge lizard (included software with the pdk) I started into ableton and the korg was not recognized. I fiddled with the midi preferences in live to try to get it to be seen but no luck. Not only was the pdk not seen, ableton became very slow. Live would take a minute or two to launch, sets would take even longer to load, and nothing would play when the play button was clicked

Frantic, I uninstalled the two vsts (uvi, lounge lizzard), and changed the midi prefferences to be what they were without the pdk. I turned off the pdk. But Ableton still runs like molasses in january...

This is especially frustrating because I reformated my computer last week to fix slowness I had believed was caused by a prior midi controller (numark total control). I must be doing something wrong with the midi control config or something - something that screws live up even when the controller is disconnected.

I've looked at other posts discussing graphics cards and irq conflicts, I'll try to look into that. Here is a chronology of recent changes to the computer, in case it helps you help me help myself ;)

PC config as of Nov 08: Dell OptiPlex 755 Minitower,Core 2 Duo E6850/3.0GHz,4M,VT,1333FSB
4.0GB,Non-ECC,800MHz DDR2 4x1GB, Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse
Dell UltraSharp 2407FP,Wide Flat Panel-HC,24.0 Inch
256MB ATI RADEON HD 2400 XT Graphics Dual Monitor VGA (TV-out),Full Height,Dell OptiPlex
250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s and 8MB Data Burst Cache,Dell OptiPlex755
XP Pro

running Ableton 7, Lexicon Omega, EMU xboard25, and a Casio midi keyboard (all getting along happily)

Then in Feb 09: Installed a PCI firewire card (i believe it is TI, not sure), changed to Presonus Firebox, purchased and installed a Numark Total Control (which never worked with ableton... never detected), and started using my Western Digital External Hard drive 500gig.

Ableton came to a crashing halt. I stopped using the external hard drive and that would help briefly. I returned the Numark TC because live wouldnt detect it and I believed it to be the cause of my troubles. Ableton kept running slowly (not running), and so I wiped the hard drive and started over completely.

After wiping the hard drive and installing a fresh ableton 7.0.14 the system was running smoothly (after disabling onboard soundcard). I didnt pull samples from the external hd anymore.

Then I went and got the akai mpd24. It worked with Ableton no problem, though I noticed that the other Casio keyboard would randomly stop sending notes to Ableton, but only sometimes. I didnt like it, so I decided to switch to the padkontrol, and that takes me to last nights frustrations. And here I am.

Can anyone make sense of any of this? Any ideas or similar experience? Thanks for any help

Hi Robbie,

welcome to the forum!
Please contact [email protected]
Include a screenshot of your Midi/Sync preferences and your log.txt from here:

C:/Documents and Settings/your user name/Application Data/Ableton/Live (your version of Live)/Preferences

Note that on some Windows systems the application data folder is hidden by default. Here is what you have to do to make it visible:

1. Launch Explorer.
2. Select Tools/Folder Options/View.
3. Check "Show hidden files and folders."

Best,
Jörg

Jorg, thanks for the reply. I saw you left that suggestion for some other posts and checked out the log file... I have no idea whats goin on there! :)

Somehow my problems resolved themselves last night following a system restore and changing the midi control setup in ableton! I had set the padkontrol to be midi sync'd, which it shouldnt be. I don't know if thats what caused the issue - I'll send the log file along so you guys can check it, but thankfully things seem to be working ok now.

Thanks again
