Macbook advice
there is a chance I may be getting a macbook soon
if this happens, does anyone here have any specific suggestions/advice?
I will need to get a white one so that I have Firewire
are there any hard and fast rules?

as far as vsts - I tend to avoid free ones these days anyway because I already have too much!
also, I will dual boot with XP
Re: Macbook advice
Make sure to get the FTR2234-765 mother board, with the Zyclonose D.54 chip set, a quad-ram-scan 456, and the Zoop 345-456 Esta graphics card with a Trip Floor boost. Try to avoid the Silk float head ports and the Maven cross coupler screen diode.
Oh wait, it's a Mac. Goddamn I hate PCs.

Oi vey. It just took me 5 minutes of searching to dig this up:
Landwhale wrote: If you're planning on getting a Mac, you can see which firewire chipset it has by booting into verbose mode (hold apple/command + v while powering the computer on) or single user mode (hold apple/command + s while powering on). You will see a line about a 1/3 or so down the screen regarding firewire, if the line has "TI" in it, you have a Texas Instrument chipset.
I made sure mine did before I bought it. The Agere chipsets were known to cause problems with firewire audio interfaces, so you might want to avoid getting a MBP with this chipset in it. Supposedly the new ones have the Agere chipsets, so who knows if they'll have problems or not.

Just prepping you for the world of not having to overthink everything. It will just work or not work for you. More RAM and bigger hard drives are about where your options start and end. Think of all the free time you will now have!
Re: Macbook advice
thanks - I think this is exactly the issue that I kind of faintly remembered and why I posted the threadHidden Driveways wrote:Oi vey. It just took me 5 minutes of searching to dig this up:

I believe the Lucenta chipsets were also questionable.Hidden Driveways wrote:Oi vey. It just took me 5 minutes of searching to dig this up:

2 gb of Ram should be fine. That's what I have in my Bl(mac)k Book and I never have had an issue where I feel underpowered.
The other investment I recommend: an external HD. BACK UP! BACK UP! BACK UP!
Re: Macbook advice
Agere is the same as Lucent. Had compatibility issues with RME if I remember right, work with (many?) other interfaces just fine, MOTU for example. As far as I know, all new Mac laptops have now not got TI. Take your interface to the shop to see if it works alright, that's what I did when I got my MacBook, downloaded Live demo and the performance test Live Set.

A priest, a rabbi, and a PC user walk into a bar…forge wrote:thanks - I think this is exactly the issue that I kind of faintly remembered and why I posted the threadHidden Driveways wrote:Oi vey. It just took me 5 minutes of searching to dig this up:

The priest asks the rabbi if he knows what happens when you die. Before he can answer the PC user interjects "Your screen turns blue and you forget your entire life. It's as if you never existed at all."beats me wrote: A priest, a rabbi, and a PC user walk into a bar…

Why do you need Firewire? I would change now. Firewire is already a thing of the past
