automated fade in fade out?

Post by pisquano » Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:55 pm

sorry I think this might have been discussed but,...
how do I get automated fade in or fade out to a track in live 6 (deciding how long the fade has to last if possible) ?

can't seem to figure that out

thanks!

Check out the tutorial on dummy clips.

Basically, MIDI map a CC curve to a volume control, or to the crossfader. It's tempo-based, so the fade-in/out time will vary with the tempo.

I've mapped 0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128-beat A>B and B>A crossfades, and a crossfade center CC, to BCR buttons.

I did not understand either...it was a very cryptic description. Anyways I haven't read them them yet, but here are two links to dummy clips from the Live wiki:

The way I interpret this question, the answer would be to automate the master track volume envelope.

Create a MIDI track routed to a virtual MIDI bus (IAC/MIDI Yoke), and MIDI-map dummy clips to MIDI or keystroke buttons. I've used CCs on BCR buttons:

Image

Use a MIDI CC curve to automate the crossfade, volume, or any MIDI-mappable parameter you want. Here's a 128-beat linear crossfade:

Map the virtual MIDI bus to the control of your choice. Here, CC 119 is mapped to the crossfader:

Push a BCR button, instant smooth crossfade. Route a track back to the BCR if you want the BCR LEDs to reflect the crossfade position:

I use a similar technique using looped CC clips as LFOs for lighting and video effect control. It's especially powerful if you combine it with Follow Actions.

The technique is just as valid for production!

but an awful lot of work.

i just use clip volume envelopes or draw in envelopes in arrange.

The work is all front-loaded. Now that I have a comprehensive library of clips, I just drag 'n drop.

Then again I only use them for live performance.

definitely interesting!

i just wanted to make sure folks who are new to live know that there are easier things to do if you just need a fade in or fade out, not an automated x-fade. (can automate x-fade in arrange too if you don't need it live... i seriously never use x-fade, hmmm, maybe i should!)

Ooh, I've just been setting up dummy MIDI clips to control Live's MIDI remote mappings - I've not done that before, and it's bloody marvellous! Thanks for the tip.

I've been setting up a bunch of 1 and 2 bar rises and falls, which control a variety of effects (filter sweeps, various beat repeats, FX splashes and so on). Then I've got a bunch of groups, so I hit my "1 bar fall" key on my keyboard, and Live picks one of the 1 bar fall clips at random (follow actions) and plays the MIDI stuff to control Live remotely, affecting whatever I've set up to be controlled.

It's superb for doing various complicated transitions over a set number of bars without you having to try and manually twiddle 10 parameters and once, and reset everything for the drop!

Wicked fun!

Hello folks!

I have been trying to figure out how to do the below method of autofade, and can't quite get it. Also, please let me know if anyone knows a simpler technique (although this seems pretty simple, I just can't figure out how I would get the midi fadeout to control the volume of an audio clip)

thanks for any help!
best,
kip
