Questions about utility

Post by PlasticSoul » Sat Mar 21, 2009 6:18 pm

Hey guys... :)

I'm a bit confused, about utility. I read the manual but the info there is not much useful in this case.

Its about the width knob.
I want to use utility with pads, to fit them better in the mix.
So if I want spread one at 3 o'clock both sides (left & right) I must use 30 in width, if I want spread other pad for filling spectrum purposes I use width 50, it will be 5 o'clock both sides.

Am I right?

But if I'm right, what is the deal panning 75% for example?

This part of manual confused me:

"The Width control acts as a continuous mono to stereo controller when set from 0 to 100
percent. However, beyond 100 percent the output starts to fold in on itself. At 200
percent the output contains only the difference between the left and right channels. If
either Left or Right have been chosen in the Channel Mode chooser, the Width control has
no function and is therefore disabled."

What means "fold in"?
What means only the output is "only the difference between left and right"?

Can somebody help me please? Thanks in advance.
:)

think of it this way.

the width control is for stereo spectrum presence. 0% is FULL/ONLY MONO. 200% is FULL/ONLY STEREO.

so. the ranges in between are the differences between the spread.

the more you move the number to 200%, the less mono content there will be. anything below 100% will reduce the stereo content of the signal.

I think at 200% the channels are inverted giving a pseudo-stereo, hollow, spacious sound.
It isn't true stereo (which is 100%).

Between 100 and 200% I guess it's a mix between the pseudo stereo and stereo.
