Live Packs - Where are they?

Post by H20nly » Tue Mar 24, 2009 5:18 am

I just reinstalled Windows and (of course) Live. I have the Live 7 Suite. I re-installed all the packs on the installation DVDs. I'm not sure why though...

I didn't loose my hard drive or anything I just re-installed Windows (due to Windows issues) on a new 250GB drive with a 50GB partition for Windows and 200GB for my DAW's sample library. I record all my audio (tracks) to another drive.

When I reinstalled I wanted to make sure I had all my Live packs but in Preferences only found like 3 - basics, lessons and another one I forget. I was under the impression that if I moved my sample library over from my old hard drive and pointed Live to it in the preferences I would have all my Sessions drums, Horns, flutes whatever... No dice.

So I spent a couple of hours clicking on every pack that came on all the DVDs and what I could find on older hard drives. I got all that done so tonight I go to work on a track I had previously started, but its missing samples.. So I search and nothing. I've gone through all my folders and I think I have installed all the Live packs I have, but when I went to Ableton.com to check for updates there was a Session Drum expansion. When I try to install, it tells me I have 16 packs missing. WHAT?

Where do these things go in the library? Is there a smart way to install/reinstall them that I'm missing or overlooking? If my project can't find my samples and they should be in the same folder just a in new location (that Live is pointing at) where (else) do I point it to find the missing samples??? Is there a folder in Program Files or somewhere that I need to copy over as well?

Uh Help??

I must be missing something.

Oh and to clarify I have a long list of Live packs now in Preferences (including the LE versions - grrrr) it just seems like I've overlooked something.

Ableton support is usually ultra fast and awesome. Have you emailed them?

Yeah thats the problem... I already installed from dvd then downloaded and installed from that point...
I also sent an email to [email protected] and have heard nothing. I even sent a second email just in case. No, there is nothing in my junk email either.

First Steinberg demonstrates their above the customer mentality, et tu Ableton?
It's sad when you can get better support for a 50 dollar router than you can for 800 bucks worth of software.

Whoa !!

Hold it right there buddy. I can tell you from personal experience having dealt with many software companies, including Steinberg (who are quite curt on their web forum, but then again, that's not their official support, you contact the distributor for official support and SB Canada, at least, were good), that Ableton are just about the best company out there.

How long ago did you write your e-mail? Usually Ableton respond within 2 business days, which is way above the standard, and are helpful and polite in their response. I have asked support 3 things and the sales team 2 things and have been very impressed and I'm not the only fan boy !!!!

Don't you know that they are just about to release a new version of Live and therefore, you have to expect a slightly longer delay on your request.

You should be able to download the packs, or most of them, from the website advised previously.

For the record Ableton support did email me back on Thu 4/09/09 7:26 AM. I sent my original support request on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 17:26:47. According to my calculations that’s a little over 2 weeks...

The suggested fix from Ableton was:

"-open Live-go to 'preferences->file folder'-write down or remember the path which is listed under 'library path' (FYI, this will be the root folder of Live's library). If necessary, set the path to a reasonable folder on your hard drive by clicking the 'browse' button.-close Live-browse to the library root folder on your hard drive using Windows Explorer -if necessary, make a backup of your own projects or presets (just in case you saved any within the library root folder)-trash all contents from the library root folder Now download and install all *Live 7 Live Packs* from:http://www.ableton.com/livepacks"

The ACTUAL fix that took place a few hours after my last post was to assign the old library's (hard drive's) name and drive letter to my partition where the "new" library resides. I think its safe to assume at this point that projects save the path where a sample resides. So, if that changes, even if your preferences are pointed to the right place, the samples can not be found. I'm guessing this is because you can use samples that are outside the LIVE library in your projects. What do I know?

Thanks leedsquietman and Ableton for your suggestions but if you read my original post you can see that I already reinstalled all the live packs from DVD and ableton.com (again). I have the LIVE 7 Suite and that casual reinstall takes HOURS, as I mentioned. I really didn't feel like going through it a 3rd time. Maybe it would have fixed the problem, but after not being able to work on any of my "old" projects for over 2 weeks let’s just say I was out of patience and spending another night clicking on .alp files that I already have just didn't seem like much fun. Besides if my projects were all pointing to 'X:\Core\Samples\Ableton Live Library' and I (re)installed to 'D:\Samples\Ableton Live Library' would that have fixed the problem?

If you guys want to send me a bunch of new Live Packs to install for a few hours I'd be real happy to do that. Otherwise, I'd rather spend my time getting to the point - which is making music.

Nice of you to stick up for Ableton and all leedsquietman, but all I was really asking for in my second email was an acknowledgment of the receipt of my first email. I could have waited for a fix if I knew someone was actually working on it. Besides, in the end, my fix seems not only much faster, but much easier...

You guys are right. I mean why support users you have with existing software when you should be worried about the future right? Lord forbid we don't have a new version every year. What would we do if we were forced to use the same version for a year and half or worse yet, two years in a row? That would be awful huh?

If you can't support the version you have then you have no business making a new one. PERIOD.

I've been upgrading LIVE for a few revs now too, but I need this to keep working for me or else I'm going to stop recommeding it and start looking elsewhere. Happy customers are repeat customers and word of mouth is a powerful tool. No new version is worth sacrificing those who are loyal and helped put the money in your pocket to create it.

So spare me the excuses. I really, really like Ableton Live, but I don't have such a hard on for which version number that I have that I'm willing to scrap samples out of existing beats. I don't think anyone else who has a problem should either. I realize that most people who use the software will probably never do sh*t with it outside of impressing their friends (if that), but there are those who count on it for a living. If YOU used it LIVE (on stage) and you had a major show, would you be saying to the guy who owns the venue "look I know I was supposed to deliver this stellar performance but I had a glitch and you know, they're coming out with a new version"?.. That crap would be tossed out the door with the rest of your gear.

My point is that it does not make it any better. If they are busy, cool. Send an email that says we have received your email and are looking into it. We'll get back to you. Its simple. You don't even need a person to do it. It could be automated. Its basic customer service. Look at the answer I got (16 days later)... We're they even trying.

Imagine you contact Microsoft or Apple because of a glitch and two weeks later they say "you should reinstall your OS". You'd be pissed.

Besides I'm not mad I'm disappointed. Excuses from people on the forum don't make it better. This is where I came for help. Excuses don't put the kick drums and hi-hats back in projects.

F it. I don't wanna be a little biatch about this, but with this "Whoa buddy" crap and the "oh yeah they are coming out with a new version right now" thing its too much. Its like adding insult to injury.

If you wanna help, tell me a good way to get those duplcates out of my library without possibly trashing older projects or address some other part of my post. How about answering this:

So far all I've got is "contact support", "support is usually so good", and "download/reinstall" your whole f*%king library again. - Which does what for my projects?

P.S. Based on the fix, it would seem the library was not the problem to begin with.

Lets go nuts and ask some silly questions..

1) Can you name the samples that are missing? (or provide a screen shot of the missing samples browser)
This way we can determine which Live Pack the samples were from... probably..

2) Have you tried finding the samples using the windows file searcher?

Its fixed now. So, no.

I could have, but I'm not breaking it to prove any points. I did try and use the file manager (could be the wrong name not at my DAW) in Ableton, but the list was really long of broken files and they should have been there. What I mean is the library was moved as a complete unit, 1 folder. So why would file A vs. file B be there?

I let Ableton manage Ableton samples. I would search for other samples using Windows search sure but not in this case. I knew where they were, but my projects and the Session Drums update didn't...
