Weird resonance on one note (G2)

Post by chymera » Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:47 pm

hi guys,

maybe you can help me. I've noticed that when I play a bass sound at G2 there's a big, subby, muffly resonance on it. Move it up or down one semitone and I don't get that resonance. It happens on the majority of my synths with a bassy sound, software and hardware. My first thought is that is it's something to do with my monitor setup or acoustic treatment in the room, however, when I record tracks with that unwanted resonance and play them on my other reference stereo in a different room, I still get the same resonance (in fact sometimes its even amplified). Any ideas what's going on? I'm at a loss

cheers!

Which synth? Perhaps you just play the same frequency as the filter cutoff and have a high resonance.

Can you give some more details on the sound creation chain? Which synth, which filter settings, which effects etc....

If it's happening on the majority of your synths then it most likely points to the room/monitoring setup, unless there is something common in the effects chain that could be affecting them.

Could you be getting the same standing wave in different rooms ? If they're the same size then it's probably possible but maybe not too likely, do you get the same resonance on a decent pair of cans ?

Yeah its your room i would think. What i have done in the past is to set up a soft synth (rapture in my case) to give a simple sine wave output, set an envelope up for pitch so that when you play a note it sweeps a broad frequency spectrum over a couple of seconds. If you then use voxengo span plugin on your master out you can watch the frequency sweep and you will see the point at which you get the resonance - you already know its around G2. By using the sine wave you know that there will be no resonance from the synth etc. Anyway i get this at around 125Hz in my room and i've not found an economic way to deal with it yet.

Sounds like a resonant room mode. Try repositioning your monitors. Bass traps in the corners would help too.

Here's a good resource.

Could very well be a room mode as mentioned. If it gets better/worse as you move around the room then you definitely have some low frequency acoustic issues going on. That being said, I've always noticed that low G to sound particularly resonant in many many different rooms, on many different systems. If I ever want a huge bass note, I use that G. I first noticed it while watching a guy use a foot controller to trigger bass notes while he played guitar....he kept hitting this monster note so I went up to watch him and sure enough it was that G.

The wavelength of G2 is about 22 feet - typical room size

rock wool bass traps.

jus about to biuld some for a new room.

Look up Gear Slutz and SOS acoustics forums both on bas traps. If you get the wood cut to size and plan it well it should be a relatively easy job.
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.
