Bought the Live 7 Suite in February to qualify for the upgrade to Live 8 Suite. Just downloaded the Live 8 Suite, though, and haven't been able to unlock =\ Shot off an e-mail to Ableton-- hopefully I'll get a quick resolution.

I love Ableton, but am very disappointed in the fact that they are not discounting educational upgrades anymore.

To me, this is a mistake in these times of global recession. Money grubbing at this time seems plain wrong to me and I know this will deter quite a few people from making the upgrade. I can update Cubase SX3 to C5 (which is 2 generations) for 10 dollars less and get significantly more features and value in the upgrade compared to upgrading Live. I know it was a good selling point before having educational upgrades at a discounted price and I remember gleefully telling the Cubase forum about what a great company Ableton were to offer this, and some of them liked that customer friendly attitude and actually bought into Live.

Now it's a giant raspberry from Ableton to it's customers, as Steinberg are offering me better value in upgrading Cubase, something I would NEVER ever have envisaged from them (quite an arrogant, ego centric company who didn't give a fig about it's customers), but in response to the recession they have slashed prices on C5 and are trying to do things to encourage sales, whereas Ableton is getting more and more expensive and goes through a change every year, whereas Logic and Cubase do a lot of free features updates and only move versions every 2nd or 3rd year. I think Mr. Behles and Mr. Roggendorf and Mr. Henke are really taking a risk with this business strategy and I don't support it. As much as I love Live and could not do without it.

229 US dollars to upgrade Live 7 Suite d/l to Live 8 Suite d/l is definately a huge wad of cash. Latin Percussion and Collision are very minor things IMHO which don't influence me at all. But to even upgrade the Suite instruments I own in L7 to L8 )esp. Operator) and get the features I do want, i.e. Looper, Group Tracks, Crossfades and the new instrument plugins, it's only 40 bucks less. On the edu upgrade, I would have been very positive about upgrading immediately if the discount applied (you know 80-100 bucks doesn't sound much, but right now that's food for a week. A good friend of mine has just moved into a homeless shelter after being evicted, tell him 100 bucks is nothing), but now I am not so enthusiastic, and even if I was, I couldn't afford this amount of money right now anyway.

No, joking, but what do you mean exactly? The update seems fine library-wise...

I mean if all your presets/sounds/ etc that you made with 7 and all livepacks installed to 7library updated/integrated to live's 8 new library without any problems!

@leedsquietman: Today '2009' live is definitely the most expensive daw to buy or upgrade. But also is worthing definitely any penny! You know what i mean.

Of-course im not happy with the prices (like maaaany people **who are talking about, to maaany forums around the world**) but ill shut the fuck up and upgrade it!
Of-course no one is forcing me or you to do it. priorities...

IP - you have been a registered user on the board for a matter of weeks. I'll reserve judgement that you have experience with Live prior to this, in order to make a broad sweeping statement such as 'it's definately worth every penny'. Obviously, we all have a love for the company and the software, and I've always considered Ableton a totally stand up, customer friendly company, so I am hopeful that they will reconsider the decision on scrapping educational discounts. They've had plenty of my money since Live 6, I have bought peripheral instruments and items from the Ableton store (even though the shipping to Canada is crippling) - but I have also championed the use of Live repeatedly on Cubase.net and persuaded several to buy into Live, and the same at other sites. All we're asking for is a little goodwill in a really terrible time.

What makes it all the more galling, is Steinberg, a company whose Cubase product I've used for 10 years, but almost put to sleep since getting Live, are suddenly getting smart after years of dumb rudeness and slashing prices and trying to get people onboard and trying to be a bit 'nicer' - who'd have thunk it. I personally would never run cracked software, but ABleton are pushing themselves more and more to people running illegit versions with their pricing policies. Yes, it's special, and has a niche, but that isn't a license to abuse the customer. So, in actual fact, even though I probably will upgrade (eventually), I don't see why I should STFU. I have a right to voice my opinion, I've bought the gear, done the online questionnaires they sent, contributed nearly 3000 posts (mostly on topic) in less than 3 years on this forum, upgraded to new versions previously and beta tested Live 7 and 8, so I've given something back to them Ableton need to know that they are putting off sales, putting off existing customers, and will be subject to more piracy.

They might not like to hear that, and I'm sure they will justify it, all we're asking for is some consideration in this grim period of economic turmoil. If they scrap edu pricing on Live 9 and the economy is in better shape by then, it's much less of a deal.

I have Ableton Live 7 Suite and want to upgrade to Ableton Live 8. Do I need to buy the Ableton Live 8 Suite Upgrade? or Just the Ableton Live 8 upgrade? I'm not after collision or Latin Percussion at this time but I would still like to retain the rest of the suite. Thanks.
