L7 Live Packs & Upgrade to 8 Question
I have several third-party packs installed that I love(from Puremagnetik and ToGeo). I'd just hate to download the L8 upgrade & find my packs gone from the library.
Anyone have experience with this ?

+1
I'm also a bit confused about the best way to blend old and new libraries.
Everyone recomends just keeping all old versions, but my only computer is starting to run out of space and I must consolidate...

When installing L8 you can choose to use your existing library (which might make some of it incompatible with L7 after you access it with L8. Otherwise, you can either copy your L7 library and choose the copied library when installing L8 rather than creating a new L8 library or you can create a new L8 library and reinstall all of the 3rd party live packs.

I think I read you to say One can :
1. save the L7 library to use w/ L8 which may or may not work. Prolly losing all of the new instrument patches along the way
2. copy the L7 library & install the new library within it (?)
3. re-install Puremagnetik & ToGeo pax - only having to pay for many of the PM ones a second time
Why don't I feel very confident in option one or two ??

Re: L7 Live Packs & Upgrade to 8 Question
You won't lose the patches in option 1, they just may not work in L7 after you open and save them in L8.
Option 2 is simply copying your library, renaming it, and selecting this library during the L8 install. That way, your existing library remains fully compatible with L7 and you have a new library for your L8 projects.
I used option 2 for the L8 beta and it worked just fine.
The third version takes longer, but if you're looking to remove the unused parts of your library then it's a good way to do it because you'll have to spend the time to reinstall all of your 3rd party packs.

1) Launch L7. Click ctrl-, and select "Library".
2) Tell L7 that your library is in an empty folder. It detects that this is not a library and asks you whether you want to create a new library or copy the old one. Tell it to copy the old one. This will take a while.
3) You will now have two copies of your library. In the future, you will use one copy for L7 and the other for L8. Point L7 at the library that you intend to use for L7 (by navigating back to it) if it is not now already pointed there
4) Install L8. Tell it that your library is the other copy. It will automatically upgrade all your L7 patches, samples, etc. to the corresponding L8 versions and leave all of your stuff alone.
I'm not making any guarantees, but this procedure worked for me without a hitch.
Re: L7 Live Packs & Upgrade to 8 Question
the simplest way to do what you need is just choose the option to update the old library. you're telling it to take your live 7 library and everything in it, and add all the new 8 stuff, thereby making it your live 8 library while not losing any of your livepacks from 7. what people are trying to point out is simply that if you are keeping live 7 on your computer for some reason, and want to then access stuff from the updated library in *the old live 7*, it may be incompatible. but if you are just using 8, no issues. updating the old library like this is way easier than having more than one library on your computer. you can always first make a backup of it, just in case, store that somewhere, then update.

Re: L7 Live Packs & Upgrade to 8 Question
i just did this.....copied my live7library...pointed live8 to this copy(preferences/changelocation)
then live8 will automatically update all the info/data it needs to,
and all previous installed 3rd party packs(Puremagnetik etc.)are now available in live8
ps:if you are absolutely sure you wont ever need to get back to live7(for old-warping or whatever)
then you could also just point live8 to your live7 library
but as been said before, this may make your library unusably in live7
so best to make atleast a backup on dvd or ext-hd
greets seis.

this is what I was trying to get at - would my pax get erased ?
What you're saying is that; there is an "update" option in the upgrade process that respects the existing library & includes it in L8
Can anyone confirm this ?
