Each Slot in Drum rack has MIDI

Post by jasper » Thu Mar 26, 2009 5:01 pm

When you expand the Drum rack, each drum chain
is shown in the clips view with its own audio fader...

There is also the little triangle used for triggering the drum sound.
The rest of that channel is empty space. No MIDI for that drum,
no SENDS for that drum...
Each of those drums in that drum rack should have
its own MIDI clips. Even if the drum's Clip only triggers
the single note for that drum.

You might not know this, but if each drum slot
did have its own MIDI clip..
Live's Drum Rack would be perfected.
The only one we would need
for building loops, recording,
experimenting, and performance.

It is the secret to drums: give each drum its own MIDI Clip
and you got the kind of drum machine people gravitate to.
I'm telling you the truth.
(i.e. nobody would even look at fruity loops anymore.
The reason people do love using fruity loops is because each
drum has its own MIDI). Nothin more. ;)

Please.

i think if you drag each drum rack channel into an open space in the session view, you'll find that it actually does what you want already.

Almost.
I mean keep it in the Rack.
Dragging it out of the rack and it just becomes
a separate drum rack with one drum in it! lol.

When you unfold the Drum rack track, see all the sub-tracks?
They are missing their MIDI slots.

Just one of those ultra-time-saving, cool musical ideas.

No you can't do it with third party stuff.

Expand an Instrument Rack track
and those sub-tracks that come
popping out from it have no midi.

They have the little Trigger arrows,
which implies they COULD have midi.

Whateva.. Live's good for AUDIO.

WF,

Live 8 does it, so I'll have to buy it eventually.
you could explain how.

insert a multi output instrument, than the desired number of midi channels with an external instrument device
on the external instrument devices set the "midi to" field to your drum machine and the "audio from" to the appropriate channel
this way you can have groups of drum sounds on one track instead of every sound has its own midi (maybe the with new grouping in ableton makes this possible with the drum rack too)
