Angstrom wrote:So, your contention is that 'rights' such as free speech, exist only to "improve the welfare of the society that sets them up"Jeff Brown wrote: On this thread and elsewhere, some have tried to voice the argument that the principles of free speech dictate that the only ethical arrangement is for everyone to have the right to post whatever garbage they want to thrust at the public. The history of Western philosophy is not on your side. Rights are designed for the explicit and sole purpose of improving the welfare of the society that sets them up.
I would say that is incorrect. Rights actually embody the opposite: the right to dissent from the society that set them up. There is a very good reason for this, and that is : 'morally good and pure' ideologies can often become horribly corrupt without the license for fools to dance in the kings court and poke mockery through nonsense. When the fool is killed, you know you are in trouble.
I'll give you an example : in the late 19th and early 20th century industrialization was wrecking the health of many people. To combat this physical and mental ruination a new movement of naturalism and interest in nature and human health was begun. Philosophers and biologists endorsed this idea, Darwin's theory of evolution, ruskins views on teh countryside, all rode this popular wave of fascination with nature, perfection and idealism. All agreed that the purity of nature was the pinnacle of perfection, so therefore impurities ought to be removed, defectives, racial 'types' all ought to be weeded out to maintain this purity. Can you see where I am going with this?
The "history of western philosophy" tells me that Nietzsche's ideas of the 'superman' , the 'purity' that you seek, is not a good idea.
You see, the problem with anybodies ideas of "purity" is : Who gets to decide, and what happens when those individual predjudices become dogma.
It is not 'for reasons of profit' that they let the forum be as it is, it is because of history. Ableton is a German company, and you may think I am being glib here, but I am not. Ableton's staff have said exactly this on this very issue, this is their philosophy and it is a valid one.
'purity' is not to be sought.

OP is a douchebag.
we talk plenty of audio here and in great detail.
don't get your dick tied in a knot. If you click on a topic that isn't about audio or live, that's your fault. No one made you do it.

So..Uhmmm.... Ya... Ok....
I'm embarrassed to ask... but where are the the threads with the naughty pictures??????
Just for my edification.
+1 Audio talk, IMHO any talk or communication, is better delivered with wit, and humor.
Precise and technical are not antithetical to a good fun.
Learning and Communicating seem tied to a state of relaxation and freedom ie. fun
+1 More picture of monkeys!

Angstrom - I might be reading you wrong, but I think you need to go over Nietzsche's idea of the übermensch (over man - beyond man..) one more time.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

Re: Moderators, please -- censor us!
the OP wants to 'eliminate the rubbish' and to make this a forum solely talking about audio.noisetonepause wrote:Angstrom - I might be reading you wrong, but I think you need to go over Nietzsche's idea of the übermensch (over man - beyond man..) one more time.
He also states that the only free speech that should be allowed is that which supports the tenets of this (his) idea of conversational perfection. Furthermore he states that any deviation from perfection has been proven to be bad by "the history of western philosophy" (!)
my point is that although the idea of perfection seems sound , in fact history has proven that trying to implement purity via authority is actually bad; taking a good idea and using it as a basis for a 'moderating' authority tends to simply apply the prejudices of the moderator to a society, rather than implementing the golden ideal.
"The history of western philosophy" has told me that some good ideas can be turned into some bad shit once they are turned into policy by some 'moderators'.
One of the pressure valves to prevent this bad shit happening is free speech, and that means monkey pictures and people saying "spunkbubbles"
RE: Nietzsche
my point could equally made by saying: the Qur'an is full of good ideas, but a state under Sharia law is at the mercy of the people administering that law.

Re: Moderators, please -- censor us!
I guess what really bothers me about fluffy posts is that it makes the forums hard to search. But maybe the ideal of a searchable forum is unrealistic. I've done a hell of a lot of learning on audio software forums, but almost all of it by reading what was currently being talked about, and asking questions. And I suppose that sort of approach (as opposed to search) is less hindered by fluffy posts.
Someday, I hope, there will be forum software that lets you read the content with your choice of filters. Readers who had previously combed through stuff could flag individual posts or even entire persons as useless. If you trust that reader, you could let them censor for you; if you trusted nobody (or valued everything) you could read the unabridged forum. Maybe you would read the current stream of posts uncensored, but use a censor to filter the results of searches. Etc. Twitter's kind of going in this direction -- letting you decide who's streams of content to listen to, while offering everyone's.
